The trailer for the post-apocalyptic “Mondocane” promises a scenario that is as atmospheric as it is frightening. The whole thing threatens to be all the more dramatic and heartbreaking since two children play the leading roles. See for yourself:
Mondo cane is set in the not-too-distant future, where the entire south of Italy has become a toxic wasteland, surrounded by impassable barbed wire and ruled by brutal gangs. In the destroyed city of Taranto, little Pietro (Dennis Protopapa) and his best and only remaining friend Cristian (Giuliano Soprano) dream of escaping their deprived existence. Your goal is to get to New Taranto on the other side of the fence to have a better life there.
First of all, however, the duo joins a charismatic but unpredictable gang boss (Alessandro Borghi), whom everyone meaningfully just calls “Testacalda”, i.e. “hothead”. The boys’ friendship is put to the test when Cristian quickly rises in the gang’s hierarchy. In addition, with the pretty Sabrina (Ludovica Nasti) there is suddenly a girl between them, while a policewoman (Barbara Ronchi) obsessed with Testacalda mercilessly hunts down the gang…
“Mondocane” celebrated its world premiere on September 2, 2021, as part of Venice International Film Critics’ Week. In the US, it hits theaters on May 20, 2022. It is not yet known when and how we will be able to see the film in this country.
Inspired by the best
Sci-Fi and apocalyptic thrillers from Italy are a real rarity. The atmospheric images and the score, which evokes memories of horror master John Carpenter, whet the appetite for Alessandro Celli’s feature film debut. Especially since the director and screenwriter, who until now has only worked for youth television (“The Knights of Castelcorvo”), draws inspiration from literary classics such as “Lord of the Flies” and “Oliver Twist” as well as films à la “Mad Max” or “Blade Runner”. fetched.
In addition to the two newcomers Protopapa and Soprano, some well-established mimes for cellos stood in front of the camera. The best-known face in the cast in this country is probably Alessandro Borghi from “Suburra” and “On my skin”. Besides him, there are also Ludovica Nasti from the great series “My Brilliant Girlfriend”, Barbara Ronchi (“Hotel Imperial”), and Josafat Vagni from “Borgia”.
