Produced by James Wan and Jason Blum, “M3gan” is one of the cinematic successes of this beginning of the year. A popularity that should ensure a bright future for the killer doll…
A new generation killer doll
After the saga Insidiousproducers and horror specialists James Wan and Jason Blum reteam on M3gan. A feature film by Gerard Johnstone (Housebound) and written by the director of Saw and Akela Cooper, who had previously collaborated on the cheerful and regressive Malignant.
M3gan presents a new antagonist capable of imposing himself as one of Annabelle and Chucky’s contestants. As she welcomes her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) home after the death of her parents in a car accident, Gemma (Allison Williams) struggles to bond with her and can’t find enough time to take care of it, absorbed in her work. She therefore decides to go to the end of a project on which she has been working for several months: a doll with artificial intelligence and supposed to understand the personality of the children in order to become a true friend for them.

As soon as she meets M3gan, Cady actually smiles again and the first days in her company go wonderfully. Alas, a thousand times alas, Allison presented this revolutionary toy to her niece despite an unfinished operating system. Supposed to watch over the little girl, the doll will take this rule a little too seriously and twist completely.
An uncensored version in preparation?
Despite its promising concept, the irony of its introduction and a few heartwarming scenes, M3gan unfortunately lacks madness and inventiveness (discover our review here). This does not prevent the film from being a hit. Since its release, at the end of December in France and at the beginning of January in the United States, the feature film has already raised more than $45 million in worldwide revenue for an estimated budget of just $12 millionaccording to information from vulnerability.

A success that should ensure a bright cinematic future for the sadistic doll. Whether a sequel has yet to be officially announcedAkela Cooper told the Los Angeles Times that an uncensored version of the film could see the light of day:
This is not to criticize Universal, I love them. I understand that once the trailer went viral, some teenagers got into it. We want them to be able to see the film. There should be an uncensored version at some point…I heard it was in the works. But yes, it was much more gory. His kill count in the script was higher than in the movie. It wasn’t a massacre on the scale of Gabriel in Malignantbut she was killing a bunch of people, including a few characters that James (Wan) said to me, “I like what you did with these characters, but I want them to live.”
M3gan has not said its last word for Gerard Johnstone
For his part, Gerard Johnstone assured Variety be particularly excited about the idea of offering new adventures to M3gan:
How could I not be? Now that the movie is done and people are making it their own. We have so many ideas and there are so many facets of M3gan’s personality that we would like to explore. I am convinced that there is still a lot to do, and that M3gan still has a lot to say. (…) I would love to do another one. Hopefully it will be soon, while the film is still fresh in the minds of the public.
