A sequel to the big hit of 2014 “Lucy” has been mentioned several times, but is it still relevant today? On the occasion of its broadcast on TMC, we take stock.
In 2014, Luc Besson presented his new heroine to the public: Lucy, played by Scarlett Johansson. And the adventures of this student seeing her intellectual capacities develop ad infinitum as a result of circumstances beyond her control have made a box office hit.
With 5.2 million admissions in France and grossing over $ 450 million worldwide, viewers expected a sequel to Lucy to see the light of day. But it never happened, and it probably never will.
Already, Luc Besson never seemed to particularly want it even if the success of the feature film pushed him to consider the idea. “Everyone is asking for more. I think I’ll have to. Finally, if I find an idea because when you see the film, it’s hard to imagine a sequel. It wasn’t written for that at all“, he assured RTL in 2014.
But in 2017, when Variety had indicated that according to the then CEO of EuropaCorp, Marc Shmuger, the studio was actively preparing a sequel and that Luc Besson had already written a screenplay, the filmmaker had vigorously denied the information.
In a long message posted on his Instagram account (since deleted) of which there is a small vestige on Twitter, the director had indeed declared: “No, I’m not preparing Lucy 2. Neither yesterday nor tomorrow.“
Since then, the project has never resurfaced and with the financial worries encountered by EuropaCorp, especially since the flop of Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and the rape charges against the director, there is little chance that that changes in the future.
