“Lost” knew how to play with the nerves of its fans in particular thanks to its hallucinating moments which glued the televiewers to their sofa by wishing that the week passes faster. Back on his end of episodes that marked us.
Everything you’ll read below is SPOILER, so it’s worth stopping your reading here if you haven’t seen the series and want to keep all of its surprises intact:
A cliffhanger is a shocking or surprising moment in a series. Here are our best “lostian” cliffhangers. This selection is obviously subjective and everyone will have their own, feel free to share yours in the comments. What follows is simply a feeling of the author, who can not hold the truth about the series.
BECAUSE YOU LEFT (season 5, episode 1)
In 1977, Professor Chang (a character already seen in the films of the DHARMA Project) wakes up and gives a bottle to a baby. He then goes to a shoot to explain what the Flèche station on the island is for.
However, he is interrupted by a worker who has come to tell him about a problem with the Orchid station, which is under construction. After stopping the work, we realize that one of the workers is … Daniel Faraday!
A character introduced in the previous season, Faraday is a time travel physicist and finds himself back in the days when the DHARMA Project is in full swing.
Faraday is also going to visit Desmond under the trap to tell him that he is “special” and that the time hopping on the island has no effect on him! Another surprise for this season premiere titled in French The exiled.
TOMB FROM HEAVEN (Season 1, Episode 19)
In Deus Ex Machina (Fallen from the sky in French), the episode mainly sees Locke and Boone trying to open the hatch in order to uncover its mysteries. After a strangest sight and an injury to Boone while attempting to climb a tree, Locke remains alone at night by the trapdoor and cries, complaining that his efforts go unrewarded. And suddenly, the hatch lights up!
Even if a few episodes will still be necessary to discover what shelters the trap door, this moment of the first season knew how to create the surprise with the effect however worn out which is “the light in the darkness”.
Symbolically, it is one more step in Locke’s journey who will never come out of his credo: “the island expects something from us”, “fate has led us to her”. The oppositions with Jack on this subject will provide the viewer with some of the tastiest moments of tension in the series. The end of the season will end with the hatch opening, another cliffhanger.
BLOCKED! (season 2, episode 17)
The mysterious Henry Gale, prisoner of the island’s survivors and kept in the bunker, was ultimately not who he seemed. Thanks to Sayid, this manipulative and calculating character played by Michael Emerson was finally unmasked.
Death on the island following a bad airship trip, Henry Gale was buried there. When Sayid and his troops find his ball, they also find a body, that of a man named … Henry Gale! But who is occupying their bunker in this case ?!
It is on this question that ends the episode which in parallel sees “Henry Gale” (Ben) helping John Locke with a blast door which could have crushed him. In return, Ben makes Locke promise to protect him from Sayid “no matter what”. A master stroke from the talented manipulator. Note that the title VO is a play on words: Lockdown literally means “locked up” but can also be taken in the sense that Locke is down : on the ground.
THE MESSENGER (Season 4, Episode 11)
Cabin Fever is one of those episodes in which the Lostie has his brain twisted by the possibilities provided by new information released by the writers. In this episode, Locke walks into Jacob’s cabin and talks there with Christian, Jack’s father (actually black smoke).
“Christian” declares to take care of Claire and asks Locke what he really wants. Locke comes out of the cabin and announces to Ben and Hurley that he will have to “move the island”.
How can an island move? How is Christian who arrived dead on the island standing in front of Locke? What is Claire doing in this cabin? Where did baby Aaron go? So many questions that will remain unanswered for some time, except the first of them, which will be resolved at the end of season 4 and will have important consequences for the following season.
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (season 3 episode 22 and 23)
Double episode, Above the…
