Announced at the Prime Video Presents France event last March, the first French Amazon Original film Le Bal des Folles is revealed with a first trailer. This feature film directed by Mélanie Laurent is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Victoria Mas published in 2019 by Albin Michel and Renaudot prize for high school students.

Le Bal des Folles tells the story of Eugenie, a luminous and passionate young girl at the end of the 19th century. Despite her solar side, Eugènie has a dark secret, she hears and sees the dead. When his family discovered him, his father and brother took him to the neurology clinic in La Salpêtrière.

This clinic, directed by the eminent professor Charcot, one of the pioneers of neurology and psychiatry, welcomes women diagnosed with hysterics, epilepsy and madness. In this new hostile environment, Eugenie will meet nurse Geneviève, who will turn her life upside down as she prepares to attend the famous “Bal des folles” organized each year by Professor Charcot.

For this new feature film, Mélanie Laurent reunites with Lou de Laage, which she had already directed in Respire. Alongside the actress, we find an enticing cast: Emmanuelle Bercot, Benjamin Voisin, Cédric Khan, Christophe Montenez, Lomane De Dietrich and Grégoire Bonnet.

Produced by Alain Goldman and Axelle Boucai for Légende Films and written by Mélanie Laurent and Christophe Deslandes, Le Bal des Folles will be available on Amazon Prime Video in France and the rest of the world on September 17th.

Note that another film Le Bal des folles, directed by Arnaud des Pallières (Orphelines), is also in the pipeline according to Variety. For this feature film, which will be an adaptation not of the novel but of the historical fact, the screenwriter Christelle Berthevas will sign the screenplay with the director and Léa Seydoux will play the main role.
