King Richard, a biopic about the father of tennis players Venus and Serena Williams, unveils his trailer. The film will land on December 1 on the big screen.
After having chained several blockbusters, from Gemini Man to Aladdin via Bad Boys For Life, Will Smith returns to a more intimate register with King Richard.
In this biopic directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the actor lends his features to Richard Williams, father and coach of tennis champions Serena and Venus Williams.
The filmmaker has chosen to focus on the point of view of this man in the shadows, endowed with an atypical personality. He was the architect of the sporting success of his daughters, who have become exceptional players.
Serena notably won 39 Grand Slam titles (including 23 in singles), becoming one of the greatest tennis champions in history. As for Venus, she gleaned 23 (including 7 in singles). Unusual careers, forged by the uncompromising Richard Williams.
In the film, we find the two young teenagers, making their debuts in this demanding and sometimes ruthless sport. Knowing precisely the future he wants to build for his daughters, Richard has planned everything to make Venus and Serena Williams legendary figures.
Thanks to his unorthodox methods, he will manage to take them from the streets of Compton to the tennis courts of the biggest international championships. This work, which promises to be deeply moving, testifies to the importance of family, perseverance and unshakeable faith in others, which makes it possible to lift mountains and make a lasting mark on the world.
In these aspects, it recalls the outstanding roles played by Will Smith such as In Search of Happiness or 7 Lives. In addition, the actor has himself camped a legend of the sport in Ali, biopic on the mythical boxer Mohamed Ali, directed by Michael Mann.
Aunjanue Ellis plays Oracene “Brandi” Williams, the mother of the two daughters. These are performed by Saniyaa Sidney (Venus) and Demi Singleton (Serena). Tony Goldwyn, Jon Bernthal, Andy Bean, Kevin Dunn and Craig Tate complete the cast. The film will be released on December 1 in France.
In the meantime, 5th Set, in which Alex Lutz plays a tennis champion on the return, is still showing.
