Eight years after the release of the second opus, a Kick-Ass reboot could finally see the light of day under the direction of Matthew Vaughn.
Will the Kick-Ass franchise make a comeback in cinema? Last week, Chloë Moretz spoke of her desire to put on the Hit-Girl costume again in a potential 3rd opus. This time, it’s the turn of Matthew Vaughn, director of the first film, to talk about the resurrection of the saga on the big screen.
During a round table with the team of ComicBook.com, the filmmaker has made a shattering revelation that will delight fans!
“We’re going to do a big Kick-Ass reboot in two years”, he said. “It’s so crazy I can’t talk about it. But we’re ready to do it. We’ll get the rights back in two years and then we’ll do the reboot. People are going to be like ‘But he’s crazy!” adds Matthew Vaughn.
We’re gonna do a big kick-ass reboot in two years. It’s so crazy I can’t talk about it.
Reporters then asked the filmmaker about the possible return of the original cast, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Chloë Moretz. Vaughn preferred to kick in touch.
“I think the clue is in the title. Kick-Ass invented a genre in itself. When we did the first episode, everyone was saying that it wasn’t possible to make a ranked superhero movie. R [les mineurs (17 ans et moins) doivent être accompagnés d’un adulte, ndlr]”, he recalls.
“It’s true that it was crazy and I was like ‘great, let’s go!” It’s going to create controversy, everyone is going to talk about it, some people will love it, others will hate it. I’m not saying the characters we know won’t be in the reboot, I’m just saying it’s not what everyone can imagine.
And I’m going to need a very, very brave actor or actress to play the new Kick-Ass because it’s going to screw their money! “, concludes Matthew Vaughn.
The director, therefore, wishes to restart the franchise from scratch with a new cast. No Kick-Ass 3 on the horizon or prequel, as he announced in 2015:
“We would like to go back. We’re working on a prequel idea around Big Daddy and Hit-Girl where we would learn how they became vigilantes and we came up with a pretty cool idea. By doing this, we hope to satisfy people who did not like Kick-Ass 2 so that we can then do Kick-Ass 3 “, he assured. This option, therefore, seems to be stored in a drawer.
In the meantime, Vaughn will be back in theaters on December 29 with The King’s Man: First Mission.
