Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves
Forget the historical approximations, the presence of the fantastic and the American accent of Kevin Costner to play an Englishman and let yourself be carried away by this adventure film which goes at 100 miles an hour! The fights and twists multiply and the points of humor at regular intervals prevent the film from taking itself too seriously.
From the first to the smallest role, everyone seems dedicated to making the film as light as possible, of Alan Rickman with his famous line. “and cancel the Christmas holidays” the catapulting of Robin and Azeem (Morgan Freeman) over the ramparts. The film is full of cult sequences for those who accept the starting premise of the whole team: “let’s have fun with Robin Hood”.
More info: The character of Will the Red, played by Christian Slater, could have been played by Johnny Depp. Not yet crowned Edward in the Silver Hands, which will be released three months after the start of filming of Robin Hood in September 1990, the actor simply refused the role.
Imagine a western starring Kevin Kline, Scott Glenn, Danny Glover, Jeff Goldblum and of course Kevin Costner from the director of Friends First. If that’s not enough to tempt you, the story is that of an adventurer, Emmett, who will assemble a team of smart triggers to oppose the corruption of a small western town called Silverado.
If the film is not devoid of digressions that could have remained on the editing bench, it is clear that we are facing a solid western, classic in form as in substance, enhanced by the quality of its performers and the music of Bruce Broughton (nominated for the Oscar), who will sign the same year that of the Secret of the pyramid and later the soundtrack of Bernard and Bianca in the land of the kangaroos.
More info: The set for the western town was built especially for the film and has since been reused in Young Guns, Wyatt Earp (by the same director, still with Costner) and Wild Wild West (also with Kevin Kline).
