Five years after “Detroit”, we finally have news from Kathryn Bigelow. The director of “Minesweepers” and “Zero Dark Thirty” has a film project that will be made on Netflix.
Kathryn Bigelow, one of the greatest directors
There are filmmakers who unfortunately we see too little. Kathryn Bigelow is part of it since she realized “only” ten feature films in forty years. And given the quality of his films, we would have liked to see more. Since 1987, he offers At the edge of dawn a sublime and delicate vampire film, marked by moments of extreme violence. Then there was the excellent BlueSteel (1990) with Jamie Lee Curtis before point break (1991) marked a turning point in his career. A cult film that has become a reference for many.

Finally, if the fascinating and avant-garde Strange Days (1995) was, unfortunately, a financial failure, Kathryn Bigelow recovered well and became 2010 the first woman to receive the Academy Award for Best Direction for Minesweepers 2010. Zero Dark Thirty (2013) went on to critical acclaim with five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress for Jessica Chastain.
Back on Netflix
In 2017, Detroit was released in theaters. A new radical and realistic proposal from Kathryn Bigelow, in line with her two previous films. But there again the feature film did not have the success it deserved. So here it is five years that we were waiting for the filmmaker to have a new project. It is now done! The good news comes from Deadline which announces that the director will tackle an adaptation of David Koepp’s novel, aurora. The book hasn’t even been published yet (release scheduled for June 7 in the United States), but Netflix still took the trouble to buy the rights.
It will therefore be on the streaming platform that we’ll find Kathryn Bigelow. The script, written by David Koepp himself, will see humanity being hit by a solar storm. As a result, all electrical networks will be affected. But the story will focus on a divorced mother who must do everything to protect her child and find her brother, a rich man from Silicon Valley who has just built a luxurious bunker in the desert in anticipation of this kind of event.
There is currently no further information on the production of aurora. In any case, we hope that the relationship between Netflix and Kathryn Bigelow will go well and that the film can be done as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can always review Zero Dark Thirtyavailable on Netflix.
