Developed by director Ava DuVernay, the DC Comics New Gods adapted film was canceled by Warner last April. A setback probably due to the version of Justice League signed Zack Snyder.
It was in 2018 that Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Shortcut in Time) was recruited by Warner to develop a New Gods feature film with comic book writer Tom King based on the work of legendary Jack Kirby. A project that was to center on the supervillain Darkseid and his group of dedicated warriors, the Female Furies.
However, in April 2021, the movie has been canceled altogether. At the microphone of SiriusXM radio, the director returned to the subject, assuring: “I loved New Gods, the canceled project. The studio decided they didn’t want to continue in a certain part of this comic book world due to certain things happening with another movie set in this world. So before I could even finish my script with Tom King, they canceled it.”
It’s hard not to see in this statement the confirmation that New Gods has paid the price for Zack Snyder’s version of Justice League. Indeed, when the filmmaker obtained permission to deliver his version of the film released in theaters in 2017 on HBO Max, he added the supervillains Darkseid and Mamie Bonheur.
Two characters who should have been in Ava DuVernay’s film, possibly in different incarnations, which could have been confusing for viewers. Or maybe the studio just didn’t want a feature film anymore based on what Zack Snyder had created.
Despite everything, the director is not done with DC since she is currently developing two adaptations of serial comics: DMZ for HBO Max and Naomi for the CW.
