Filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona has just been hired by Netflix to make a new disaster film. Years after “The Impossible”, the director changes scenery to immerse himself in the great snowy cold, telling the story of an air crash in the Andes.
Who is Juan Antonio Bayona?
Of Spanish origin, Juan Antonio Bayona began his career as a journalist by directing some commercials and video clips. It was in 2007 that he exploded in the middle of the seventh art when he directed The orphanage, a horror thriller that has met with international success. The guy is therefore spotted in Hollywood and is responsible for carrying out The Impossible, a disaster movie starring Ewan McGregor, Naomi Watts and the very young Tom Holland. A new success which consolidates it in the medium. Since then, the artist has staged the excellent A few minutes after midnight and the blockbuster Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.
Society of the Snow
Juan Antonio Bayona has just taken to his social networks to present his next film: Society of the Snow. Or The Sociedad de la nieve in original version. According to Deadline, the filmmaker is about to embark on the production of this project, ordered by Netflix. The streaming giant therefore pays for the services of Juan Antonio Bayona. Thus allowing it to further extend its cinematographic halo.
Adapted from a short story by Pablo Vierci, itself based on real facts, Society of the Snow will tell the terrible plane crash in the Andes Cordillera. An accident that has killed 29 of 45 passengers present. The survivors then decided to feed on the corpses in order to survive. A flight in which was also installed a Chilean rugby team. Society of the Snow is co-written by Juan Antonio Bayona and Bernat Vilaplana, his favorite editor since The Impossible. The project is produced by Belén Atienza and Sandra Hermida who respectively worked on The orphanage and The Impossible (him again).
In his promotional video, the filmmaker, accompanied by Pedro Luque, his director of photography, presents the location of the filming, in the Valley of Tears, located between Argentina and Chile. The director then recalls that his film will deal with an event that took place 49 years ago. And if this video is in Spanish, it is good to underline that Society of Snow will be filmed in the Spanish language. Netflix has not yet released a release date.
