On September 29, Joséphine Japy is on the bill for “Eugénie Grandet”. On this occasion, the actress tells us about her first steps in cinema and what she is looking for in a role. A very pleasant meeting for a portrait to discover in the video above.
Eugenie Grandet, successful adaptation of Balzac
Eugenie Grandet is originally a novel by Honoré de Balzac published in 1833. Marc Dugain (The Exchange of Princesses) offers a faithful and modern adaptation. The story takes place within the family of Felix Grandet, a modest (apparently) worker living in Saumur with his wife and their daughter Eugenie. This attracts the envy of the young boys of the city. But her father refuses to marry her so as not to have to pay too much dowry. Indeed, Felix Grandet hides great wealth combined with immense avarice. His plans are turned upside down when his ruined Parisian nephew comes to ask him for help.
The film thus broadly follows the work of Balzac. Marc Dugain insists on Eugenie Grandet’s desire for freedom, until the last moments of the film (which differ slightly with the novel), and on the power of money. A period film, which greatly echoes ours. The heroine finds herself subject to the wishes of her father, and men in general. A work that allows the performers Olivier Gourmet (the father), Valérie Bonneton (the mother) and above all Josephine Japy to be at their best. The latter is flawlessly correct in each of her scenes and reveals all her sensitivity.
Focus on Joséphine Japy
We were able to meet the very nice actress on the occasion of the film’s release. In this “Portrait”, Joséphine Japy talks to us about her interest in cinema since her childhood, and her first experience in Gray Souls (2005) with his meeting with Jean-Pierre Marielle. “There was a relationship of protection, of benevolence, and I think that really made me want to continue behind“.
Joséphine Japy, who was France Gall in Cloclo (2012) and shared the poster of My stranger (2019), also tells us about his relationship to his image and his motivations as an actress, her desire for a script, a character, a project …
The actress is to be found at the cinema on September 29, 2021 in Eugenie Grandet.
