On display at the moment of Nightmare Alley by Guillermo Del Toro, Willem Dafoe has delivered some confidences not piqued by beetles on his desire to embody the Joker in the cinema.
Disturbing smile, instantly recognizable laugh… Willem Dafoe would have made the perfect Joker! He had also tried his luck when Tim Burton was looking for an actor to play the sworn enemy of Batman in the 1989 film. Finally, Jack Nicholson had been chosen.
Dafoe then consoled himself by slipping into the Green Goblin costume in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, reprising this iconic role in No Way Home. However, fans dream of seeing him as the Joker, the legendary supervillain of the DC universe.
Asked about this by QG, the actor delivered some intriguing secrets, including an idea for a sequel to Todd Phillips’ Joker which promises to excite aficionados of the Clown Prince of Crime.
TWO JOKER OR NOTHING
“It would be an interesting idea if there was an impostor Joker. So it would be possible, not to have a duel of Joker, but someone who says he is the Joker but who is not. And that starting point would open up the possibility of an interesting story.”, he confides.
It would be an interesting idea if there was an impostor Joker.
“Especially if you have Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker”, he continues, “and then you have someone who’s either an imitation or a reinterpretation. That character would either emulate what the Joker did or take credit for it. I’ve been daydreaming about that quite a bit. But aside I haven’t told anyone about that, you’re the first person I’ve revealed it to”, he concludes.
This character would emulate what the Joker did or take credit for it.
If the bad guy had a twin in the Gotham series, there was never a question of a crazy impersonator in the stories of the Joker. It would therefore be an original and unprecedented idea with real potential on paper. As a reminder, the 2019 film was a phenomenal success, bringing in $1 billion in worldwide revenue. In France, it attracted 5.6 million spectators.
FROM JESUS TO THE JOKER?
Note that Willem Dafoe and Joaquin Phoenix have already played the same character in two different films. They have indeed both portrayed Jesus: the first in The Last Temptation of Christ, and the second in Mary Magdalene.
While waiting to see the actors confront each other in a possible (and fantasized) Joker 2, we will be able to see them again soon on the big screen. Phoenix will appear in Our Souls of Children on January 26. As for Dafoe, he recently shone in The Card Counter with Oscar Isaac. He also appears in Guillermo Del Toro’s Nightmare Alley, released January 19.
True to his reputation, navigating between blockbusters and auteur films, the multifaceted artist will also be present in The Northman, directed by Robert Eggers (The Witch, The Lighthouse), in theaters on May 18.
