“John Wick: Hagakure”, the fourth installment of the franchise led by Keanu Reeves, will be one of the cinematic events of 2023. The public eagerly awaits the return of John Wick and Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves warn: this one is going to suffer.
John Wick saga continues
After John Wick: Parabellum in 2019, the third film of the name, critical and commercial success with 326 million, the dream team composed of Derek Kolstad in the writing, Chad Stahelski in the realization, and Keanu Reeves in the interpretation, will show next year the new film of the action saga, titled John Wick: Hagakure. The film is ready, or in its very last phase of post-production since excerpts were shown at CinemaCon in early May.
We expect very heavy, exceptional fights and always a Keanu Reeves completely inhabited by his assassin character out of retirement and locked in eternal revenge. Around him, we will notably find Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins, experts in the cinema of fighters, and already known figures such as Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, and Lance Reddick. There will therefore be mayhem, in an epic adventure that will take its characters to the four corners of the world, in particular in Paris where the shooting in Montmartre had made noise. And at CinemaCon, The Hollywood Reporter was able to collect a few words from the two men on their motivation for this new film.
Keanu Reeves and Chad Stahelski sadomasochists?
The director and the actor thus declared that their main motivation for John Wick: Hagakure was To make suffer John Wick.
We always find new and interesting ways to hurt John Wick. (…) And that’s where the action comes from. We wonder how to make him suffer, and from there we design the sequences.
Keanu Reeves also specifies that he participates fully in the development of the film, by proposing his ideas.
I brought a few things like, for example, taking him on horseback in the desert. Let’s move away a bit.
Regarding the fifth film, which was made official in 2020, the production seems to be taking its time. Indeed, the two men declare together “everything in time“.
We work one film after another. (…) We do it chapter by chapter. Like an author: you write a chapter, you scratch your head, then you write the next one.
It is a form of back-pedaling since the filming of John Wick 4 and 5 were planned to follow each other. A plan undermined by the Covid pandemic and the commitments also of Stahelski and Reeves, but which does not call into question, for the moment, the existence of a fifth film.
