Available on the Prime Video platform, the new musical drama Jamie tells the touching story of a high school student who dreams of becoming a drag queen. First steps on the screen, winks… Here are five things to know about Jonathan Butterell’s film.
ADAPTED FROM A MUSICAL …
On September 17, Prime Video subscribers were able to meet Jamie New, a solar hero who aspires to become a drag queen despite the mockery of his comrades, in the musical film Jamie.
This feature film is none other than the adaptation of the British musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, launched in 2017 in Sheffield before joining the West End, the famous London borough which brings together the majority of the city’s theaters. Hailed by audiences and critics alike, the show was nominated in five categories at the prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards in 2018.
… IT’S EVEN ADAPTED FROM A TRUE STORY
Musical comedy Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is itself inspired by a true story, that of young Jamie Campbell, told in a documentary titled Jamie: Drag Queen at Sixteen. Only the hero and his mother Margaret, his biggest supporter, are staged in the show, the other characters in the show were invented from scratch.
A STAR IS BORN
Jamie New is played by British actor Max Harwood, who is playing his very first screen role here. After seven months of research, the film crews have indeed found the rare pearl in the person of this young talent, who immediately amazed the director Jonathan Butterell.
“There was something about this video [d’audition] that made me think ‘this young man has something special’. So we set up a meeting, and I remember what I said when he left. I turned to Shaheen [Baig, la directrice de casting, NDLR] and I told him ‘this young man is magic’, ” he says in the press kit.
THE DIRECTOR’S BEGINNING
For director Jonathan Butterell, it was also a first! A director and choreographer specializing in musicals and theater, he directs his very first feature film with Jamie. He was familiar with the material nonetheless, as he collaborated with Dan Gillespie Sells and Tom MacRae on the show. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.
SURPRISES FOR THE PASSIONATE
If the musical Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is not particularly well known on this side of the Atlantic, a few nods to it have crept into Jamie. Starting with the presence of actress Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street, Doctor Who), who played Ray on stage, and here resumes her role of close friend of the family.
John McCrea, who camped Jamie on the boards of the West End at the launch of the show, appears as Loco Chanelle young. Other notable appearances: The real Jamie Campbell and his mother Margaret were also offered small roles in the feature film!
