“The Suicide Squad” is arguably set to be a critical and box office success for Warner and DC. Above all, the film should push the studio and James Gunn to collaborate together again. After the director, it’s DC Films’ turn to be optimistic about other projects.
The success The Suicide Squad
The misfortune of some makes the happiness of others. After being sidelined by Marvel over a history of old tweets, James Gunn was hired by Warner to direct The Suicide Squad. A perfect opportunity for the studio to bring in a popular director (thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy) and could make people forget the previous film, which was very poorly received by the public despite a high score at the box office. Since then, Marvel and James Gunn have patched up and the filmmaker is now preparing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. But we especially remember that he was able to find the right recipe for The Suicide Squad.
The film is a real success. Ultra efficient, funny and gory entertainment at the same time, and who understood everything about his characters. Overall, the feedback is very positive (see our review). We will obviously wait to see his score at the box office, but simply indicate that The Suicide Squad will have great success. From then on, DC fans began to dream of a new collaboration between Warner and James Gunn.
James Gunn “will come back“
The filmmaker had claimed to be in discussions with the studio for other projects after Peacemaker, the spin-off series with John Cena and scheduled for HBO Max. But nothing very concrete. Above all, we were waiting to see Warner’s position on this issue. And it is now Walter Hamada, at the head of DC Films, which opens the door wide for James Gunn. In an interview given to The Hollywood Reporter, he explains in fact that James Gunn will be welcome, “whatever he wants to do“.
He really has a vision and he’s a great partner for us. He can come back when he wants, we are ready for him. He will come back. We have other things planned.
A strong statement that shows warner’s confidence and the freedom that the studio is ready to give to the filmmaker. Already with The Suicide Squad, we could see James Gunn let go completely with crazy sequences. Certain passages would probably not have been able to pass at Marvel, which wants to be more general public.
We do not yet know what these next projects will be. We obviously hope to see James Gunn back for a sequel to The Suicide Squad, unless another more ambitious project with iconic DC figures (Superman?) is being prepared. In all cases, the director seems on the same wavelength as the producers of Warner, resuming the interview on Twitter.
