The French release date ofAvatar 2 “The Way of the Water” is fast approaching and with it the question that everyone is asking: will the film work at the box office? James Cameron is aware that the world has changed since the first film, and already knows what he will do if the results of the sequel are disappointing.
Avatar 2: the wait was long
In 2009, the whole world discovers the new wonder of James Cameron: Avatar. A film with excessive 3D ambition, in which the visionary director propels us into the fairytale world of Pandora where the Na’vi people live. On this planet that orbits Alpha Centauri A, scientists have developed a program that allows humans to integrate with the local population using Na’vi clones. The goal of the maneuver is to negotiate with the locals to exploit a rare mineral likely to solve the energy crisis on Earth.
Jake Sully, a paraplegic Marine chosen to integrate the program, will gradually fall in love with this planet and its people. Thus, he ultimately chooses to become a Na’vi and continue his existence alongside Neytiri on Pandora.
Thirteen years later, we will finally find Jake and Neytiri the next December 14 in The Way of the Water, the highly anticipated sequel to the first film. Still together, they have founded a family, and are living happy days on Pandora. But a new threat from the GDR forces them to have to leave their natural habitat and take refuge on the reefs. In this new magical place, they meet a new clan, the Metkayinawith customs very different from theirs.
All eyes on the box office
Avatar is still the biggest hit of all time today. worldwide box office with nearly three billion dollars in revenue. The big unknown is therefore whether The Way of the Water can approach this score, or even exceed it. If this second option seems improbable, the film will nevertheless be considered a failure if it does not exceed one billion dollars.
But will the fans still be there, thirteen years later? The first weekend of release in the United States will be decisive and will send a clear signal about the film’s box office career. And in case of failure, James Cameron already knows what he will do.
The last two films will wait
If James Cameron wanted to write all 4 sequels toAvatar before starting the filming of the second, it is not guaranteed to put them all in a box. Indeed, it will depend on the success or failure of 2 and 3. The cinematic landscape has changed, and the industry is no longer as stable as it was in 2009. Elements that the director takes into account when he talks about the future of his saga.
During an interview given to Total Film (via Games Radar), he confided what would happen if Avatar 2 didn’t work not enough at the box office:
We will complete the story with the third film, and we will stop there, if it is not profitable.
Lucid, James Cameron confided that the pandemic and streaming had been two blows for the industry. And that he was aware that the world of cinema was different when the first film was released. But he also hopes thatAvatar 2 reconnects the public to the experience of dark rooms:
Maybe we’ll manage to remind people what the cinematic experience means. This movie is made for that. But do people still care?
