Obi-Wan Kenobi is over for now. But after the broadcast of the final episode 6 on Disney+, fans are naturally wondering if the “Star Wars’ series is expanding for a second season. Originally, the Obi-Wan adventure was designed as a mini-series, but in the past few weeks and months, statements from those involved have accumulated that point to a second season.
In this article, we’ve gathered testimonials from key Obi-Wan Kenobi stars and creators to answer the question: How likely is Season 2? In addition, we then go to our video editor Sebastian to get to the bottom of the question of how such a sequel could continue.
One thing is certain: there can be no second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi without Ewan McGregor. That’s why we asked the main actor in the DashFUN interview if he could imagine further appearances as Obi-Wan, for example for a second season. His answer was not only positive, but downright euphoric:
“I would love it. I don’t know how it would be if I played him again, but it was so much fun that i’m pretty dying to do another season… and then another… and then maybe another and then another… and then another and then I’ll be about 65 years old. Then I would be about the age of Alec Guinness [als er Obi-Wan Kenobi in Episode 4 spielte]. And then I keep going until they have to artificially rejuvenate me every time so I can go on.“
Sure, the answer was also meant to be a little humorous, but the fact that Ewan McGregor took great pleasure in his “Star Wars’ role and would love to return as Obi-Wan anytime, that doesn’t change anything. He recently explained this to the magazine GQ: “I really hope we do another one [Staffel 2] make. If I could do one of these over and over again, I’d just be happy about it.”
The situation is similar for Hayden Christensen. He explained to DashFUN in relation to possible further “Star Wars-Appearances as Darth Vader: “I love that ,Star Wars’universe and this character means so much to me. I think there is definitely more to do and I am very open to that too.”
The Anakin/Vader actor also gave other such answers to other media, although he was always very careful not to speak of an “Obi-Wan” season 2, but his general openness to further “Star Wars“ projects to emphasize. It is already known that Hayden Christensen will also be involved in the upcoming “Ahsoka” series:
Kathleen Kennedy, the President of Lucasfilm and thus the main person responsible for the complete “Star Warsfranchise, said in March this year in an interview with Entertainment Weekly Hope for a season 2. She emphasized that everyone “had a great time together” and that “everyone involved is happy to see [würde]that it does not stop.” However, she also made a caveat.
Kennedy: “If we decide to do anything else with the character Obi-Wan, we have to answer the question: why?”
Obi-Wan director Deborah Chow disagrees Entertainment Tonight similar: “If we continue, it will only be if there is a real reason for another [Staffel] are.”
In the end, Kathleen Kennedy in particular should decide whether “Obi-Wan Kenobi” will continue. The only thing she can’t do without is Ewan McGregor. But with his statements he has already made it clear that he would be there at any time.
Now the only question is whether there is a real reason for Season 2. The Disney Plus series has received mixed reviews from fans. There are disappointed, euphoric and balanced voices. Obi-Wan has an average rating of 7.2 on IMDb. That’s not bad, but a lot worse than “The Mandalorian’ (8:7) and even behind The Book of Boba Fett (7:4).
Kathleen Kennedy should be even more interested in whether the series is financially worthwhile than the opinion of the fans. The premiere of the first two episodes set a Disney+ record. And in the following weeks, the series was the most streamed series ever, at least in the USA, which speaks for a second season.
Now that the great conflict between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader seems to have ended, a sequel could have the problem of not having much to offer compared to Season 1. All of these pros and cons need to be weighed, and as of now, we can’t predict what Disney and Lucasfilm will decide.
As just mentioned, Season 2 would face the great challenge of constructing another exciting story about Obi-Wan. It would be conceivable that, like in the comics, he would meet Wookie Black Krrsantan, whom series fans already know from “The Book of Boba Fett”. Or the Jedi devotes himself more to his spiritual side and learns the ability to become a Force Ghost from Qui-Gon Jinn. But those options seem so unspectacular compared to the Vader conflict in season 1, that it’s hard for us to imagine how a second season could really continue the story in a worthwhile way. Too much leeway without losing the “Star WarsBecause violating canon doesn’t exist for Obi-Wan.
Our YouTuber Sebastian has nevertheless considered what a second season of “Obi-Wan Kenobi” could look like and presents you with his very own thoughts in the following video. However, he does not rule out that Darth Vader will still play an important role in the season.
