“Inventing Anna” highlights the crazy story of con artist Anna Sorokin. But the series did not please Rachel Deloache Williams, one of its victims, who finds that Netflix glorifies this criminal.
A new scam with Inventing Anna
After posting The Tinder Scammer on February 2, Netflix launched on February 11 Inventing Anna, devoted to another type of mobster. If the documentary tells the crazy story of Simon Leviev, the series tells that of Anna Sorokin, a con artist who posed as a wealthy German heiress and thus ripped off the New York elite.
Under the name of Anna Delvey, the young woman lived in luxury but left others to pay for them or by leaving slates in restaurants and hotels. She also got a fifty million dollar loan from two banks simply by selling a foundation project (Anna Delvey Foundation) based on his false identity.

In 2019, two years after her arrest, she was convicted of fraud. Risking between four and twelve years in prison, she was released in 2021 for good behavior.
A victim brought up against Netflix
Among the victims of Anna Sorokin who are highlighted in Inventing Anna, there is Rachel Deloache Williams (played by Katie Lowes), who considered the con artist her best friend. In 2017, they went together to Morocco. A $62,000 trip was paid in full by Rachel and which Anna obviously did not reimburse.
The victim then reacted by seeing the Netflix series and the portrait made of this scammer. As she explains in Time in a testimonial titled Anna ‘Delvey’ Sorokin almost ruined my life. Now she’s being rewarded for her crimes, Rachel was not involved in the series. And she was deeply shocked when she saw her character description:
A gullible young woman whose admiration for Anna will cost her her job, her money, and her life. But if her relationship with Anna is her biggest regret, the woman she has become thanks to Anna is perhaps Anna’s greatest creation.
For Rachel, Netflix glorifies Anna Sorokin with this series while she is “a sociopathic and narcissistic criminal“. She then believes that “millions will see Anna as an anti-heroine battling her demons and a world that underestimates young women“. An image that is too complacent and dangerous which she certainly hopes to be corrected by HBO. Indeed, Rachel Deloache Williams sold her rights to the American channel and producer Lena Dunham for 35,000 dollars, plus 300,000 dollars if the project materializes.
Inventing Anna is available on Netflix.
