Simon Kinberg and David Weil, the showrunners of the “Invasion” series, spoke to our microphone about the brand new original production of the Apple TV + platform.
How did the idea for the Invasion series come about?
Simon Kinberg (showrunner): We were inspired by the novel War of the Worlds by HG Wells but also by its radio adaptation by Orson Welles which was a hoax making believe in a real alien invasion. Besides, like Orson Welles’ version, I wanted the series to be as realistic as possible.
I also wanted to approach the theme of the invasion through the point of view of characters from different backgrounds. Unlike the constraints imposed by the length of a film, here we have the opportunity to explore the personality of each of the heroes and their stories. I’m used to working for the cinema, so it was a real pleasure to have the opportunity to be able to devote several hours to the richness and complexity of these characters.
David Weil (showrunner): I had heard that Simon Kinberg was looking for a partner to develop and co-create Invasion. During our first work session, there was so much to talk about that we spent the day together. We are both passionate about science fiction and the work of HG Wells fascinates us.
It was not easy to make this series because we wanted to tour all over the world. But the Covid pandemic had already started and it was no longer possible to travel. So it was quite a challenge to tour in Morocco as well as in New York, Manchester and Tokyo. Sometimes we had to wait several months before we could resume filming. It was an epic experience.
How does this series differ from other series about an alien invasion?
David Weil: In general, the series are centered on a group of Europeans or white Americans from one and the same region. While here we follow characters from all over the world, which lends a more universal reach to the message of the series.
Each of these protagonists is in a way an alien from their own environment. It is also interesting to see how the inner strength developed by these individuals will allow them to mobilize and fight the alien invasion.
Has your work on the show changed your perspective on the alien issue?
David Weil: Absolutely. I am convinced that we are not alone in the universe. One day or another we are going to come into contact with another species somewhere in the universe. I hope that all goes well and that they will be peaceful towards us.
