In 1994, the filmmaker Neil Jordan brought together an impressive cast, notably composed of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt to direct “Interview with a vampire”. Years later, Kirsten Dunst looks back on this experience.
Interview with a Vampire : the meeting at the top between Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise
In 1994, the two international stars Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise finally reunite onscreen to Interview with a Vampire. Directed by Neil Jordan (Alive, Greta), the feature film takes place in the 1990s in San Francisco and tells about the adventures of Malloy, a young journalist who gets an interview with Louis, a rather particular aristocrat. Interview with a Vampire has become cult over time, notably thanks to its impressive cast made up of Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Christian Slater, Antonio Banderas and the very young Kirsten Dunst among others.
Adapted from the eponymous novel by Anne Rice released in 1976, Interview with a Vampire was nominated twice for the Oscars. On the box office side, the work is a success with more than $ 223 million in revenue (for a budget of $ 60 million).
Kirsten Dunst talks about her audition
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, actress Kirsten Dunst, currently playing at The Power of the Dog, returned to her audition for Interview with a Vampire. As she auditioned for the role of young Claudia, she recalls that Tom Cruise helped her through this experience a lot.. She recalls that the already experienced actor suggested that she look even younger than her real age (11 years old at the time of the hearing):
I was the tallest girl at the last audition. So he made me bend my legs to look smaller when he picked me up. I had the impression that he was already saying to himself: “I like this kid”.
She continued her intervention by talking a little about the shooting. She confirmed that Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, and the rest of the cast more broadly, had made sure to lighten the mood on the set, otherwise quite dark:
They treated me so nicely. I was a princess on this set. The darkness was always balanced by jokes about Brad’s farts.
Interview with a Vampire had notably done a certain controversy concerning the end kiss, between Brad Pitt, already a middle-aged actor and the young Kirsten Dunst, aged 11. But obviously, the latter was not at all traumatized by the sequence, or more broadly the shooting.
Currently, AMC is working on a reboot of the film in the form of a 8-part series expected in 2022. It remains to be seen who will succeed this four-star cast …
