who hoped per Disney+-Subscription to have access to all important Disney-related films at any time is now proven wrong. Of all things “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora”, the most successful cinema film of all time, has suddenly disappeared from the streaming service – and not only in Germany, but also in the USA, many other countries and possibly even worldwide! When exactly the streaming provider removed the mega hit is difficult to understand. However, based on the recent reactions on social media, it must have happened last night.
Now, with streaming services, it’s completely normal for movies and series to come and go. After all, license agreements ensure that providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Co. only acquire the respective streaming rights for a limited period of time. However, this does not apply to in-house productions by the respective providers. For this reason, there are also significantly fewer departures from Disney+ than from the competition. The streaming service relies exclusively on content that belongs to Disney. marvel, Star WarsPixar, National Geographic: All of these are brands of the famous media group – and also the “AvatarThe film series has belonged to Disney since the entertainment giant acquired competitor 20th Century Fox.
So far, Disney Plus subscribers have been able to feel relatively safe that content that ends up on the platform will stay there. At least that was the case with the big titles to date, although there were certainly exceptions (e.g. due to license deals that were closed before Disney+ was launched or because Disney sold the rights to the competition for other reasons).
But what about “Avatar”Happened, but could happen more often in the future, because there is a calculation behind the disappearance.
On September 22, 2022 comes “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora” is back in cinemas – in a revised remastered version with a higher frame rate. The re-release appears on time, a few months before the start of “Avatar 2” on December 14, 2022 to refresh his memory and get in the mood for the mega blockbuster.
But what if people don’t go to the cinema because they can see the film on Disney+ anyway? This is exactly what Disney apparently wants to prevent.
Because as Disney + confirmed to us, “Avatar’ was only taken off the streaming service for a short time while the film returns to theaters. Although it is not yet certain when he will return, it will definitely be before “Avatar 2” be so far, we were assured.
The nice streaming illusion that with Disney Plus you could really access all the important Disney titles at will is gone. Instead, this may even set a precedent for the streaming world that users are unlikely to like.
In February 2023 there will also be “Titanic’ as a remastered version in the cinemas. So will the legendary shipwreck disappear from Disney+ shortly before that in order to lure subscribers to the cinema?
›› “Titanic” (still) on Disney+*
Either way, it’s of course very annoying that Disney+ usually doesn’t communicate when content disappears from the platform. The competition, such as Netflix, Amazon and WOW, show a countdown from a few weeks before the loss to inform customers in good time and have their own categories in which the “soon to be gone” titles are listed. The mouse house could learn a lesson here…
Note: The statement from Disney+ was added to the original message at 3:42 p.m. (17 August 2022) and slightly revised.
