The magazine “Empire” has devoted an exclusive file to the next installment of the saga “Indiana Jones”, revealing in particular unseen images of the film by James Mangold. We also know more about the introductory scene which promises to be spectacular, and in which Harrison Ford will be digitally rejuvenated.
Indiana Jones 5 : direction 1969…
Next year, Harrison Ford will take Indiana Jones’ hat and whip one last time in a fifth installment, for which James Mangold (Logan, Le Mans 66) succeeds Steven Spielberg as director. A feature film to which the magazine Empire has just devoted a file revealing exclusive images, including one of the villain embodied by Mads Mikkelsen, as well as several elements of the plot.
This new opus will take place mainly in 1969. After The Raiders of the Lost Ark and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the famous archaeologist will again fight against the Nazis who notably participated in the conquest of space on American soil. As co-screenwriter Jez Butterworth told Empire, “the Apollo program was carried out in part by a band of former Nazis”. Mads Mikkelsen should precisely interpret one of them.
For this new confrontation, Indiana Jones should have her goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) as an ally. But before the film devotes itself to this famous space race between the United States and Russia, viewers will find the hero in the middle of World War II.
… after an introduction in 1944
The opening scene, which promises to be tough, will reveal a digitally rejuvenated version of Harrison Ford, thanks to De-Aging technology. This introduction will take place in a castle and will mark a first confrontation in the feature film between Indiana Jones and Nazis. For James Mangold, it’s about give a first “adrenaline shot” to the public before taking it to the end of the 60s.
Producer Kathleen Kennedy promises real visual prowess with this sequence:
My hope is that we look at the scene and say: “Oh my God, they found footage shot forty years ago!” We plunge the public into an adventure, Indy is looking for something and we immediately say to ourselves: “I am in an Indiana Jones film”.
As for Harrison Ford, he asserts that looking younger is ‘a bit scary’. In any case, the actor finds the result credible and adds:
I don’t want to know how it works, but it works. But it doesn’t make me want to be young again. I’m happy to be that age.
Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Renée Wilson, Toby Jones and Antonio Banderas complete the cast of this fifth IndianaJones. The movie will be released June 28, 2023 in French theaters.
