The protagonist of “The Hideout” is 13-year-old loner John (Charlie Shotwell). He is highly intelligent, but often gets lost in his thoughts. He lives in a large, modern house on the outskirts of town with his wealthy parents Brad (Michael C. Hall) and Anna (Jennifer Ehle) and his older sister Laurie (Taissa Farmiga).
One day he is playing with his companion drone not far from his home in a deserted forest. Then he discovers an unfinished bunker in the form of a cemented, deep shaft in the ground. The parents explain to him that a couple of neighbors wanted to build this bunker years ago as a protection against possible catastrophes, but then they ran out of money.
A little later, John puts his unsuspecting family out of action with sleeping pills and gradually gets them to the shaft with a wheelbarrow, from which there is no escape without help from above. Confused, then angry, finally starving and terrified, the trio wait for John to free them from their wilderness prison, while at the family home, carefree, he enjoys his newfound independence…
The film celebrated its world premiere in January 2021 as part of the renowned Sundance Festival, before being screened in seven major German cities at the Fantasy Filmfest in September of the same year. On August 25, 2022, “The Hiding Place” will be released on DVD and Blu-ray with FSK 12 approval and as video-on-demand. “The Hideout” is the directorial debut of the Spaniard Pascual Sisto, previously a highly respected installation artist and architect. The film is based on a short story by the writer Nicolás Giacobone, who adapted it himself into a screenplay. The Argentine previously wrote scripts for Biutiful and Birdman. With the latter, he won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar in 2015.
The most recognizable faces in the cast of the film are undoubtedly “Dexter” star Michael C. Hall as well as Jennifer Ehle from “Contagion” and the “Fifty Shades Of Gray” series. Also standing were Charlie Shotwell (“The Nest”, “Captain Fantastic”), Taissa Farmiga (“The Nun”) and Tamara Hickey (“Mother/Android”) in front of the camera.
