It can be very exciting to see comedian actors in serious roles. Think Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting and the underrated One Hour Photo, or Jim Carrey in The Moon Man, The Truman Show, and of course, Forget Me Not. “The Patient” is not the first dramatic project for “The Office“- and “Virgo (40), male, sucht …” star Steve Carell – fans will remember “Foxcatcher” or “Beautiful Boy”. Nevertheless, it is always refreshing to experience the mimes outside of their comedy comfort zone.
In “The Patient” Carell works primarily with Domhnall Gleeson, who in “Star Wars 7 – 9” gave the obscure General Armitage Hux. Before you recognize the Irishman, well dressed in sunglasses and a hat, the first thing that catches your eye in the trailer is his perfect American accent. In the cinema, the son of “Bruges see… and die?” audience favorite Brendan Gleeson recently played the human lead in “Peter Rabbit 2 – A rabbit makes his way from the field”. Supporting parts include Linda Emond (“Succession”), Andrew Leeds (“Barry”) and David Alan Grier from the original “Jumanji” included.
The creators and showrunners of the series are The Americans creators Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields. The whole thing is designed for ten episodes and should definitely be completed after that. So there will be no cliffhanger or anything like that at the end of the season.
The Patient premieres in North America on August 30, 2022 at the FX Content Hub on the Hulu streaming platform. The FX series there, such as “American Horror Stories”, “Reservation Dogs” or “Y: The Last Man”, usually end up on Disney+ under its star banner in Germany. It is likely that “The Patient” will behave the same way, but a confirmation in this regard and a local start date are not yet available. So the title can also come to us in other ways.
In “The Patient” we meet psychotherapist Alan Strauss (Steve Carrell), who is very concerned about the well-being of his clients. However, his commitment and empathy become the man’s undoing when he makes the impression that he is perhaps a little too helpful to a potential new patient during his first exploratory talk.
Because Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson) captures the shrink without further ado and takes him to his home basement. There he chains him up so that he can start a particularly intensive therapy. Fortner is a serial killer who desperately needs to be cured of his deadly habits.
Now Dr. Strauss how he can help the unpredictable, violent temper-prone man: not only to prevent further murders, but also to avoid becoming his next victim…
