With “The Woman King“ A very special film will start in German cinemas on October 6, 2022. Because with 94 percent positive reviews Rotten Tomatoes and 77 points MetaCritic (As of October 3, 2022), the new film by “The Old Guard” director Gina Prince-Bythewood is not only one of the best-reviewed Hollywood productions of the year. On top of that, it should also appeal to a particularly wide audience.

And the visually stunning, action-packed and grippingly intense trailer should appeal to fans of Marvel’s legendary superhero adventures as well as friends of historical material that have been processed into films. If the preview makes you want to see the rest of the film, then there is good news: you can already “The Woman King“ Experience in cinemas throughout Germany.

But be careful: with “The Woman King’ and ‘Black Panther’ are not simply different interpretations of the same story. While Marvel’s T’Challa aka Black Panther is the focus of the story, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s film revolves around the Agoije – a unit of Elite-Women warriors who are considered to be the inspiration for the Dora Milaje from “Black Panther”.
West Africa, 1823: The kingdom of Dahomey is oppressed by the Oyo empire and has to pay taxes to its occupiers, which neither King Ghezo (John Boyega) nor his general Nancisca (Viola Davis), who is known for her merciless harshness, can do Elite-Unit leading Agoije fell. As the conflict escalates and the people of Dahomey are to be finally subjugated and enslaved, the warrior sees her chance not only to defend her country with all her might, but also to take revenge on Oyo’s fighter Oda Ade (Jimmy Odukoya). We’ve already seen the historical action drama and gave it a good 3.5 out of 5 possible stars in the DashFUN review. Our author Lutz Granert praises the cast and the brutal, mostly hand-made action and sums it up in his conclusion: “The Woman King” as an action-packed history lesson as well as a massive reckoning with the patriarchy.
