But be careful: with “The Woman King’ and ‘Black Panther’ are not simply different interpretations of the same story. While Marvel’s T’Challa aka Black Panther is the focus of the story, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s film revolves around the Agoije – a unit of Elite-Women warriors who are considered to be the inspiration for the Dora Milaje from “Black Panther”.

West Africa, 1823: The kingdom of Dahomey is oppressed by the Oyo empire and has to pay taxes to its occupiers, which neither King Ghezo (John Boyega) nor his general Nancisca (Viola Davis), who is known for her merciless harshness, can do Elite-Unit leading Agoije fell. As the conflict escalates and the people of Dahomey are to be finally subjugated and enslaved, the warrior sees her chance not only to defend her country with all her might, but also to take revenge on Oyo’s fighter Oda Ade (Jimmy Odukoya). Because she still has a score to settle with him…

We’ve already seen the historical action drama and gave it a good 3.5 out of 5 possible stars in the DashFUN review. Our author Lutz Granert praises the cast and the brutal, mostly hand-made action and sums it up in his conclusion: “The Woman King” as an action-packed history lesson as well as a massive reckoning with the patriarchy.

Also present alongside Oscar winner Davis (“The Help”) “Star Wars VII-IX” hero Boyega and the Nigerian actor Odukoya, who could celebrate his Hollywood breakthrough with it, are also out “Captain Marvel” and “James Bond 007 – No time to die” known Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu (“The Underground Railroad”) as well as Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who in recent years, mainly thanks to the “After Passion” film series was on everyone’s lips.
