Maya Hawke is currently conquering the Netflix charts with her revenge comedy Do Revenge. But most of her fans know the daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke mainly from “Stranger Things’, where she plays the whimsical teenager Robin. And while she owes a lot to the popular mystery series, she also has a point of criticism.
“I think the series has too many characters”explains Maya Hawke in a special interview format Vanity Fair, during which she was hooked up to a lie detector. Her Do Revenge co-star Camila Mendes (aka Riverdale) asks the questions. Is there a character that you think should have died in Season 4? Maya Hawke replies, “Yes,” but declines to give a name.
The passage in question starts at 16:58, but beware: spoilers for “Stranger Things“ Season 4!
She may be referring to her own character, Robin. Because in a recent interview with Rolling Stone explained the “Stranger Things”-Star:
“I would love to die and have my hero moment. I love dying with honor, like any actor would.”
A few months ago, Eleven actress Millie Bobby Brown caused a stir when she complained that the cast was now too big to take group photos. The solution you suggested at the time: “I said, ‘You guys have to start killing characters.’ But the Duffer brothers are two sensitive people who don’t want to kill anyone. We have to be like ‘Game Of Thrones’.“
Whereupon the addressed series creators Matt and Ross Duffer reacted: “We went through all the options. Hypothetically, if we killed Mike, that would be depressing. We are not ‘Game Of Thrones’. That’s Hawkins, not Westeros.”
And while Maya Hawke agrees with Millie Bobby Brown about the show having too many characters, she also appreciates how attached the Duffer brothers are to their cast:
“I love how the Duffer brothers love their actors. […] you want to [deren Figuren] not dead. I think that’s a beautiful quality they have. I wouldn’t wish it any other way,” explains Hawke in an interview, but also makes it clear: “[Staffel 5] is the last season, so people will probably die.”
Season 5 of “Stranger Things’ is due out on Netflix in 2024.
