The second part of the saga carried by Jennifer Lawrence, “Hunger Games: The Burning” marked the arrival of a new important character in the person of Plutarch Heavensbee, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. However, the saga subsequently had to make some readjustments due to the sudden death of the Oscar-winning actor.
Hunger Games – Catching Fire: Katniss returns
While fans of Twilight barely recovering from the end of the adventures of Bella and Edward, another adaptation of the bestseller for teens was born in 2012. Her name: The Hunger Games. The first installment followed Katniss Everdeen, a young woman living in a post-apocalyptic America named Panem. To save her little sister, she had to participate in a barbaric game show called “Hunger Games”. The latter sends its participants to fight to the death with several other warriors in an arena.
The first opus is a great success with 694 million dollars in worldwide revenue. Above all, it allows the promising Jennifer Lawrence to definitively become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. The second part entitled Hunger Games – Catching Fire released quickly, a year later. Directed by Francis Lawrence (who replaces the director of the previous film Gary Ross), the blockbuster allows us to find Katniss who is forced to participate again in the famous “Hunger Games”. Again, the feature film triumphs at the box office with 865 million dollars in worldwide revenue.
This second part is also an opportunity to see a big name added to the cast of the saga: Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The death of Philip Seymour Hoffman has turned production upside down
The American actor, therefore, integrates a cast filled with stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Stanley Tucci, and Jeffrey Wright, among others. Unfortunately, whoever plays the role of the enigmatic Plutarch Heavensbee was found dead on February 2, 2014, victim of acute poisoning due to a mixture of drugs and medication. A tragic disappearance for the world of cinema… His death posed a big headache for the film crew of the saga since the character was to play an important role in the sequence of events, as proved by the cliffhanger of Hunger Games – Catching Fire.
As a result, it is impossible to make the character disappear from the rest of the saga. The production therefore quickly explained that the following two parts had been shot one after the other and that Philip Seymour Hoffman had already performed most of his scenes. As for the incomplete scenes, they were rewritten and the crew had to use digital technology to insert the comedian into the missing shots. As for the editing, it was done in such a way that the actor did not have to be replaced.
Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 and Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 are his last two films, posthumously.
