Actor Ryan Reynolds has announced that Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in ‘Deadpool 3’. But one question remains: how will the character be reintegrated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? Here are our assumptions.
Wolverine back in Deadpool 3
This Tuesday, September 27, 2022, Ryan Reynolds released an awesome teaser video of Deadpool 3 on his Twitter account. In addition to putting himself on the stage once again with a lot of self-mockery, the actor confirmed the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. As a reminder, the latter has hung up the clutches of the famous mutant in 2017 with the excellent Logan by James Mangold. Sorry for the spoilers, but it’s time-barred. Logan evolves in the film in the near future and finds death at the end of the feature film. A dark, violent and thrilling last lap that brilliantly concluded the mutant’s 17-year arc.
However, Hugh Jackman will be back in Deadpool 3, despite his spectacular death. Another problem: Deadpool 3 will anchor itself in the MCU. Except that in this universe, for all we know, Wolverine and the X-Men Don’t Exist Yet, Even Though Mutants Have Been Introduced. With these elements, it is still very difficult to know how Deadpool, and by extension, Wolverine, will fit into the MCU. Even with the false explanations given by another video posted on Hugh Jackman’s Twitter account.
Another parallel universe?
Logically, Deadpool 3 should follow the two previous parts of the saga, and in all likelihood, to the other films in the X-Men timeline. Normally, Deadpool 3 will take place before the events of Logan, so Wolverine’s death shouldn’t be too much of a problem. But then the movies X-Men would they just become canon? Unlikely. Another option, the most logical, the universe of X-Men and Deadpool could simply take place in another dimensionin an alternate universe, like those of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire and their sagas Spiderman respective – as explained in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Thus, if Deadpool 3 will be a stamped film marvel studios and rooted in the MCU, he might have no connection to the rest of the universe, to justify the presence of Deadpool and Wolverine. One way, if Marvel Studios goes with this option, to reuse the characters in possible other opuses that would address the multiverse. We obviously think of Avengers : Secret Warsexpected November 5, 2025, which is expected to be a beautiful mess of the multiverse. This would be an opportunity for Marvel Studios to concretely integrate the X-Men, Deadpool and Wolverine into the MCU. And if Hugh Jackman wants it, he could remain the face of Wolverine in the MCU. Even if we believe in it…
In any case, Deadpool 3 is expected on September 4, 2024 in dark rooms. A Deadpool/Wolverine reunion has plenty to excite fans. And it’s a bit the very last lap that Wolverine/Hugh Jackman was missing. We’re not hiding it from you, we’re still looking forward to it.
