The first season of “Game Of Thrones: House Of The Dragon” consists of ten episodes – which means that the finale awaits us next week. Episode 10, titled The Black Queen, will be released on October 24, 2022. You can see them on Sky and WOW (formerly Sky Ticket) from 3 a.m. German time.
And in the final episode, the foundation for season 2 is laid: because now the civil war is really starting, which is called “Dance Of The Dragons” or “Dance of the Dragons” in George RR Martin’s original. We skipped a good 20 years through Season 1 to learn the backstory that started out as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen (Milly Alcock) and Alicent Hightower (Emily Carey) were friends and ended up being each other with the Green (Alicent) and Black (Rhaenyra) factions.
Because where a civil war is supposed to break out, there must be two parties that split the (political) groups up to the point of armed conflict. In episode 9, the leader of one faction was proclaimed: Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) was crowned the new king after the death of Viserys (Paddy Considine) in the dragon pit – unbeknownst to Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), who was considered the official successor of the king until the end. However, Alicent (Olivia Cooke) believes the king’s last wish was different.
In episode 10, Rhaenyra now learns about the death of her father on Dragonstone/Drachenstein from Rhaenys (Eve Best), who fled with her dragon Meleys. The trailer shows Rhaenyra being crowned by Ser Erryk Cargyll (Elliotttitsor) – which also explains the episode title “The Black Queen”.
So now there are two people in Westeros who claim the Iron Throne as queen and king respectively – and that means war, which really gets going in Season 2. And what do Targaryens need for successful warfare? That’s right, dragon.
Both parties already have a few of them. But the more dragons, the greater the advantage, and finally there are also some of the animals that are currently without dragon riders, i.e. belonging to no party – for example the “bronze fury” Vermithor, according to Vhagar the largest dragon at the time of “House Of The Dragons. It should be this that Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) approaches in the trailer singing in High Valyrian in order to win him over to the blacks.
So more dragons means significantly more dragon action for Season 2. There will be a foretaste of this in episode 10, In the coming seasons we can expect some iconic fight scenes with dragons, which George RR Martin describes in the book “Fire and Blood”.
