A new genre is born – well, not yet, but soon. Then With “Mad Heidi” the first Swissploitation film will start in German cinemas on November 24th, 2022! Fans of exploitation cinema, who have already enjoyed genre twists such as Brucesploitation, Nazisploitation and sexploitation over the years, can now be excited to see what awaits them in the latest subgenre of brutal niche films…
… although that’s not entirely true. Because the very first trailer, which was followed by an extremely successful crowdfunding campaign that made the feature film possible in the first place, made it pretty clear: Here, too, things will traditionally be extremely brutal and pretty crazy. Instead of Bruce Lee doubles or moon Nazis, however, we can now expect a slaughter somewhere between Swiss chocolate and cheese fondue. After all, anyone can water-board, but fondue boarding? That should probably become the first feature of the Swissploitation cinema.
What began years ago with a ludicrous trailer fun is now becoming a really big number. Because the makers around director Johannes Hartmann were so well received with their wonderfully stupid idea that they were actually able to put together a full-length feature film. And it shouldn’t just appear quietly and secretly as a stream or on DVD, but unite friends of off-the-beaten-track cinema in German cinemas in just under three months.
“Mad Heidi” should not only be fireworks for exploitation fans, but also a satire of the legendary Heimat films that were very popular in Germany, Austria and Switzerland in the middle of the 20th century. In addition to bloodthirsty splatter spectacle, the film is also based on popular films that are mostly set against a picturesque mountainous backdrop and are less about murder and manslaughter and more about love and friendship. How does Hartmann reconcile these two totally alien genres? We are particularly excited about this…
… as well as of course the cast of the film. In addition to newcomer Alice Lucy, who will slip into the role of the title heroine Heidi, we will experience none other than Hollywood star Casper Van Dien as the Swiss dictator – and that’s a big name for such a crazy indie production. After all, the now 53-year-old has already starred in films such as Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi cult classic “Starship Troopers”, Tim Burton’s horror fairy tale “Sleepy Hollow” and Robert Rodriguez’ manga adaptation “Alita: Battle Angel”.
So it will be interesting to see how he fares as the dictatorial ruler of the Confederates – with Tero Kaukomaa he is at least in the hands of a producer who has plenty of experience when it comes to letting insane rulers off the leash. After all, he already launched “Iron Sky” and “Iron Sky 2”.
Incidentally, “Mad Heidi” starts at the same time as some films that are likely to appeal to a wider audience. But it doesn’t matter whether it’s the Disney animated film “Strange World”, the drama “Armageddon Time” with Anne Hathaway and Anthony Hopkins or “Hello Dad, See You In Hell” – The first Swissploitation film is of course spared direct competition.
