Accustomed to films in which he distributes fairground potatoes, Jason Statham finds himself in 2013 in an action film called “Homefront”. However, he might never have starred in it, as this film was originally written to be part of one of the most famous action sagas of all time: Rambo.
home front : Jason not happy
Revealed by Guy Ritchie in the late 90s, Jason Statham became in the 2000s one of the most emblematic representatives of the castagne film : the saga The carrierthe saga Hypertensionthe saga Expendables, Death Race, Blitz, Killer EliteSafe… A good number of interchangeable films, but in which Jason Statham makes his charisma, his hoarse voice and his fists speak. The bald comedian therefore recites the usual score while playing in home front in 2013 (nothing to do with video games).
Based on the novel of the same name by Chuck Logan and directed by filmmaker Gary Fleder, the film follows Phil Broker, a former DEA agent who has retired to the peaceful countryside of Louisiana with his daughter. Objective: to leave his dark past behind him. Unfortunately, the demons are never far away, and he experiences it bitterly when he comes face to face with Gator Bodine, the local drug kingpin. Threatening his life, that of his daughter and the town itself, Phil is forced to take up arms again.
On the casting side, in addition to Statham, home front has pretty names including James Franco, Winona Ryder, Kate Borswoth, Rachelle Lefevre and Frank Grillo.
A story made for another castagneur
Homefront is originally a film scripted and produced by Sylvester Stallone. Sly has also engaged in the distribution of the film, Chuck Zito, his ex-bodyguard (who was also a member of the famous Bikers gang of the Hell’s Angels). The star of the saga rocky even wants to star in the movie, wishing that the latter becomes the ultimate story of one of his most iconic roles: John Rambo.
As he explains in the press kit for the feature film, Stallone had a very specific idea about home front and its history:
I was seduced by this idea, and the plot would have worked well. While I was working on the screenplay, we did extensive research on meth addicts, the fight against narcotics, and how the drug insidiously infiltrated the whole country. It’s a monstrous drug. But I ended up turning Rocky Balboaand I changed priority.
Finally, finding himself too old to play this role, he decides to hand over to another actor. This is how on the set ofExpendables 2 in 2010, he talks abouthome front…to Jason Statham who quickly finds himself seduced by the idea. Indeed, it would have been the first time that in a fight film, he would have played the role of a father wishing at all costs to protect his daughter.
Small irony of fate, however: Sylvester Stallone will change his mind a few years later and make his last Rambo, with a story resembling on some points to home front. Indeed, in Rambo: Last Blood (2019), the former Vietnam veteran lives in a remote corner of Arizona and must take up arms again when his old friend’s granddaughter is threatened by a Mexican drug cartel
