Francis Ford Coppola has already revised “Apocalypse Now” and “The Godfather III”. Now he also lent a hand with “The Outsiders”. Initially, the 4K version of the new version only appeared as a luxury edition. Now there is also an inexpensive alternative.

Francis Ford Coppola created milestones like Apocalypse Now, The Godfather trilogy, and the visually gorgeous horror hit Bram Stoker’s Dracula. His novel adaptation “The Outsiders – Rebels without a reason” never achieved such fame. Nevertheless, she achieved quite a cult status with her poetic and powerful approach to rebellious young people who were always looking for conflict. Nevertheless, quite a few film fans criticized for a long time that the virtuoso staged drama somehow seemed incomplete.
Coppola has now found a remedy himself: After he had already created new cut versions of “Apocalypse Now” and “The Godfather III”, he also took on “The Outsiders” again and published one with “The Outsiders – The Complete Novel”. 22 minutes longer Director’s Cut. This was released in cinemas in November 2021 as well as a DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K disc – however, the painstakingly restored 4K version was initially only available in a luxurious exclusive set in the Arthaus shop. Anyone who didn’t want to hit it will finally be offered a cheaper alternative from April 7, 2022:
The price difference between the 4Knew edition and the Limited Collector’s Edition, which was released in 2021, is not only explained by the limited number of pieces in the Arthaus Exclusive Edition. The collector’s set contains both “The Outsiders” film versions on Blu-ray and 4K disc, comes with a more elegant presentation, an extensive booklet, and a few goodies. The upcoming new edition has a simpler design and only offers two 4K discs.
“The Outsiders”: That’s what awaits you
Based on SE Hinton’s bestselling young adult book, The Outsiders tells the story of a youth gang roaming Oklahoma in the 1960s. Starring Hollywood stars such as Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, and Diane Lane, who are just starting out in their careers, the visually gripping drama shows the gang members getting on with women and a tragic argument turns the lives of the disoriented hooligans upside down forever…
No matter which set you choose – the new 4K edition, the Limited Collector’s Edition, or the editions of “The Outsiders – The Complete Novel” on DVD or Blu-ray: In all cases, you get the original theatrical version and Coppola’s new, longer cut version. Due to the numerous additions, but also a handful of scene cuts that Coppola made in his Director’s Cut, both versions are different viewing experiences – the new version is definitely not a pure cash grab.
Both cut versions have been painstakingly restored so that the film shines in new splendor and is full of tonal splendor – without clinically smoothing out the original look. The discs are also packed with bonus material about the origins of the drama – for example, in the extras, you will learn that Coppola was inspired to make “The Outsiders” by a bright school class.
