Dwayne Johnson reveals the unexpected pitch he came up with for a “Hobbs & Shaw” sequel. The actor even offered this scenario to Universal Pictures, which has not yet formalized a second opus.
Hobbs & Shaw : the first spin-off of the saga Fast and Furious
In 2019, Universal decides to take a step forward in licensing Fast and Furious. Indeed, the firm produces the very first spin-off of the saga, centered on the characters of Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, respectively played by Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. The opportunity to leave the peregrinations of Vin Diesel, to fly to other horizons. Buddy movie par excellence, Hobbs & Shaw brings together a cast including Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, Helen Mirren or Eddie Marsan. Even if the footage did not generate necessarily very positive reviews, it still brought in more than $ 759 million in revenue for a budget of $ 200 million. What largely produce a sequel!
Dwayne Johnson’s screenplay
However, the studio has not yet formalized the start of a sequel. However, comedian Dwayne Johnson has ideas for his next run with Jason Statham. In an interview with Jess Cagle Show for the promotion of the blockbuster Red Notice, the former wrestler stopped at the possibility of doing Hobbs & Shaw 2. He notably revealed that he brought his own script to Universal Pictures:
I loved doing the first one. So when I had an idea for a sequel I called Donna Langley, called our screenwriter Chris Morgan, and our producer Hiram Garcia. They all loved my proposal. It would be the antithesis of what the Fast and Furious movies usually are. I want to make a sequel par excellence, that of a man going away at sunset. Donna loved it and they’ve been wonderful partners at Universal, but I said, “You know, we have an opportunity here, I think we’re going against the grain and disrupting things a bit. We’re making a saga. in the Fast and Furious universe which is unexpected. So we’ll see. Donna said to me, “When can you do it?” What I’m telling you is that I’ve reached a point in my career where it now just becomes a matter of timing.
Dwayne Johnson is therefore unfortunately remained very discreet about the content of his story. The actor finally released only one real piece of information: “the story of a man going towards the sunset”. A sentence that can be translated by a conclusion. After all, Dwayne Johnson has left the franchise Fast and Furious, and will not be returning to the suites. Maybe he wants to use Hobbs & Shaw 2 to offer a real conclusion to his character. Either by the death of the latter, or by a more positive outcome like the character of Paul Walker.
As for the idea of going against the grain of the movies Fast and Furious, that would be precisely to avoid making too many sequels, and to stop only at two films. It remains to be seen whether Universal can give the green light to such a project., and thus bury the possibility of launching a new saga … While waiting to see a possible Hobbs & Shaw 2, we leave you with these few images of Red Notice, planned on November 12 on Netflix:
