The third feature film directed by Guillaume Canet, and his biggest box office success so far, Les Petits mouchoirs is being broadcast tonight on M6. The opportunity to discuss the next achievements of the actor-director.
Everyone knows that Guillaume Canet has a big project in the works: a new film dedicated to the most famous Gauls in pop culture, Asterix and Obelix. But before that, the star will offer a much more intimate feature film, shot in small groups: Him.
Know everything about Him
While he had been stopped dead in the preparation of Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire by the Covid-19 pandemic in March 2020, Guillaume Canet had decided not to twiddle his thumbs and had started writing another screenplay. The result: a film that he qualifies on Instagram of “very particular and very important for (him)“to be discovered in theaters on October 27th.
Shot at Belle-Île in Morbihan, just before relaunching the preparation of Asterix, Lui bears no resemblance to Les Petits Mouchoirs and his suite, also filmed by the sea, but this time at Cap-Ferret in Gironde. Exit the warm holiday atmosphere despite the shouting of this diptych, the tone of this new film is more gloomy.
And for good reason, he tells the story of a composer (played by the director) in need of inspiration, who has just left his wife and children and thinks he finds refuge in an old house on the side of a cliff. In this strange and isolated place, he will only find an out of tune piano and visitors determined not to leave him alone.
These visitors are not embodied by regulars of Canet cinema like François Cluzet, Gilles Lellouche or Marion Cotillard but by equally popular actors. Virginie Efira (the hero’s wife), Laetitia Casta (the mistress), Mathieu Kassovitz (the best friend), Nathalie Baye (the mother) and Patrick Chesnais (the father) thus all responded in September 2020 for a 4 week express shoot.
The Middle Kingdom: a bigger project
He therefore has nothing to do with the filmmaker’s next feature film: Asterix & Obelix: L’Empire du Milieu, in which he will lend his features to the little Gaul while the master of Idefix will be played by Gilles Lellouche.
Shot in 17 weeks between April and August 2021, this fifth film featuring the characters created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo has benefited from a colossal budget of 60 million euros. It is also not an adaptation of an album but an original screenplay co-written by Guillaume Canet and the duo behind the Tuche saga, Philippe Mechelen and Julien Hervé.
The starting point of this new feature film expected in 2022 in cinemas: a cart arrives in the Gallic village with the Chinese princess Fu Yi who came to ask for help after the coup d’etat of a certain Deng Tsin Qin, who overthrew the Empress. The reputation of the irreducible Gauls is known as far as Shanghai.
If we do not know much more about the plot, the director had still confided to the Sunday Newspaper just before starting filming: “Asterix, already a little vegan, [fera] remonstrances to Obelix on his consumption of wild boars. Both will also discover the feeling of love. The place of women is also more important, you will see …“
And to specify about his artistic ambitions: “The idea is to make children and parents laugh by returning to a quirky humor on Shabat while having a very strong visual ambition, magical, Braveheart type that meets Tiger and Dragon! I am a big fan of Chinese cinema and its crazy fights, with the characters that fly. We are going to confront the kung fu and the brute force of our Gallic heroes.“
On the casting side, Canet also saw the big picture, bringing together many familiar figures from the general public to discover below:
