Fan of books and video games, Henry Cavill quickly became a reference on the set of The Witcher. Find out how the interpreter of Geralt de Riv got involved in the Netflix series.
Henry Cavill never hid it, he’s a huge fan of The Witcher. The British actor has read all of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books and has played video games several times. When he got the role of Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix series, he devoted himself body and soul to this character and ensures that the universe is respected.
And he proved it again recently. Guest with Tom Holland, Zendaya and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in Graham Norton’s talk show, Henry Cavill confirmed that he could sometimes correct people on set when the host asked him: “Let’s say I’m very excited to be true to the source, so to speak”.
Henry Cavill is “a living bible”
His playing partner Freya Allan, who plays Ciri, goes further by saying that Henry Cavill is THE reference of The Witcher on the set. In an interview for Fortress of Solitude, the young actress was full of praise for her colleague’s knowledge:
“Henry is a real nerd, this is our bible on the Witcher. We could be doing a scene where he says ‘We should use this line from page 253 of the Blood of the Elves’ book.”
And when the actor does not suggest ideas, he deviates completely from the script! In an interview with the Polish journalist Marcin Zwierzchowski, Henry Cavill revealed that he once stood in front of the camera while filming a scene and performed a tirade taken directly from the books that was not in the script:
“There is a fragment just at the start of the Blood of the Elves where Geralt loses consciousness in Sodden Hill. He has a vision and he talks to Death. Then beautiful words are spoken about the crossing through the meadow and the fog There was no such scene in the series.
And these words captivated me with their poetry, they were so wonderfully embedded in Sapkowski’s mind that I wanted them to be spoken by my Geralt. But I didn’t want to have a long discussion to find out I could add that part somewhere. So I just did it, said those words on camera and was ready to face the consequences. In the end, it paid off since the scene is in season 2. “
But the actor explains, however, that if he can discuss certain points of detail with the writers, he cannot have the scripts modified once obtained. He can’t change the overall plot of the season: “I just changed a few dialogues, sitting in a chair, while my makeup was applied.”
A more faithful season 2
On the other hand, Henry Cavill was also able to get involved in the appearance of his character. Collider, Henry Cavill helped costume designer Lucinda Wright with her new outfit, improving mobility in more intense action scenes while respecting the universe.
According to him, fans should appreciate: “Geralt had to find new armor. But he hadn’t had a chance to stop anywhere to buy or craft any armor, so he searched the dungeons in Kaer Morhen and found something very old and from another era, but still usable. “
Either way, the actor has promised: Season 2 of The Witcher is more faithful to the books. And he made sure of it with the teams of the Netflix series, as he explained to Gamesradar :
“This season I really wanted to make sure that we pick up the Geralt from the book more faithfully and see him talk more. I really forced him to talk more. He’s still Geralt of Rivia, but he comes across more like an intellectual. “
So what did you think of season 2 of The Witcher?
