In “Secret Headquarters“ Twelve-year-old Charlie (Walker Scobell) and his best friend Berger (Keith L. Williams) can hardly believe their luck: Because Charlie’s dad (Owen Wilson) has to travel due to a professional emergency, the two nerds have a storm-free place. In order to improve their image with their classmates Maya (Momona Tamada) and Lizzie (Abby James Witherspoon), they invite the girls to a party at Charlie’s house.
Right at the beginning of the evening, the quartet discovers a room in the basement that seems to be something like a superhero’s secret base. Apparently, Charlie’s father leads a double life. The kids quickly equip themselves with super weapons. And they need them sooner than they would like: The villain Ansel Argon (Michael Peña), who suddenly appears, also wants to grab the weapons hidden in the basement in order to – well, what? – to take over the world…
In North America startedSecret Headquarters“ on August 12, 2022 in the program of the streaming service Paramount+, which can only be subscribed to in Germany from December. Whether and how we might be able to see the film beforehand in Germany or whether we have to wait until then has not yet been announced.
Even in the trailer, the superhero adventure is reminiscent of family film actioners like “Spy Kids”, “The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl” or most recently “We Can Be Heroes” by Robert Rodriguez. The most well-known names in the cast are those of Marvel stars Owen Wilson (“Loki”, “The Royal Tenenbaums”) and Michael Peña (“Ant Man 1+2”). According to the US reviews, the actual main characters of the film are the kids played by up-and-coming mimes. Walker Scobell will be starring as the titular character of next year’s Disney+ series Percy Jackson And The Olympians. So far we know him from “The Adam Project’ and his young colleague Keith L. Williams from ‘Good Boys’. Momona Tamada, on the other hand, in the “To All The Boys’ series and Abby James Witherspoon once made her debut in ‘Miss Bodyguard’ opposite her aunt Reese Witherspoon.
