The director of “Last Train to Busan” is back, this time with a series. “Hellbound” will arrive November 19 on Netflix and unveil with a first trailer.
Last train to Busan, a success and after?
In 2016 Korean cinema gave us a new slap with Last train to Busan. The feature film succeeded in renewing the genre of the zombie film by taking place almost exclusively in a train. As the passengers leave Seoul, a virus begins to spread. But in one of the cars is an infected man. Quickly the infected will multiply and the few survivors will have to do everything to get by by the time they get to Busan, the only safe city …
In addition to its presentation at the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, in a midnight screening, the film reported nearly $ 100 million at the global box office. Enough to open a lot of doors for its director Yeon Sang-ho. Except that since then, the filmmaker has struggled to convince. Psychokinesis (2018) didn’t even hit the million mark in Korea and was released in France on Netflix. Then, in 2020, there was Peninsula, failed sequel to Last train to Busan (see our review). We can therefore begin to wonder if this first live-action feature film was not just a fluke. We will have the opportunity to check this once again with Hellbound, Netflix series of which he directed all six episodes.
Make way for a series with Hellbound
As can be seen in the trailer ofHellbound (in one article), exit the zombies and make way for big creatures. Angels of death who appear to carry individuals, even if it means destroying everything in their path. Here is the official synopsis available on Netflix: After the sudden appearance of creatures from another world, condemning individuals to hell, a religious group is broadcasting the theory of divine justice.
Difficult to form an opinion with this first video. But we say to ourselves that the universe ofHellbound could be interesting. It will also be good to see how Yeon Sang-ho fares with a long series format. Finally, note the presence in the casting of Korean star Yoo Ah-in (Burning, Alive).
Hellbound, which was the first Korean series presented at the Toronto Film Festival, will arrive on Netflix November 19.
