Not only is Heat one of the greatest masterpieces of the 1990s, it’s also one of the greatest films of all time. The almost three-hour gangster ballad with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer is still frenetically celebrated and discussed today because it is not played according to classic genre rules, but an almost melancholy existentialism saga was staged that reflected on the pain and fascination of not being able to escape from your own skin. Here the characters dream of death but are forced to hunt.
At first glance, a sequel to “Heat” doesn’t seem like a good idea, the iconic radiance of the original is simply too gigantic for that. Nevertheless, director Michael Mann has ventured into a sequel – and that will be published in Germany on August 23 as a book entitled “Heat 2: Thriller”. As the master director has now announced, it shouldn’t stop there, because he plans to prepare “Heat 2” for the big screen as well.

In conversation with Empire Michael Mann has now commented on “Heat 2” – and that doesn’t mean the novel, but the film that Mann really wants to shoot. Regarding this he said: “It is absolutely planned to make a film. Is it a humble film? no Is it a very expensive series? no It’s going to be a big movie!”
Heat 2 is a prequel that focuses on the relationship between Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) and Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer). While Al Pacino may still be in the film due to a time warp, Mann already confirmed that Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer will definitely not be returning. The reason for this is simple: Most of Heat 2 takes place six years before Heat.
Al Pacino recently expressed a wish for which actor he wants for the young Vincent Hanna: “Dune’ star Timothee Chalamet. However, nothing is planned in this direction and “Heat 2” is still wishful thinking on the part of Michael Mann (and certainly also of many fans). However, the book is supposed to tell the exact story that Mann wants to tell on screen.
