HBO Max announced that genre master Alex de la Iglesia has approved a second season of the Spanish horror series “30 Coins,” and that the eight-episode season has begun.
HBO Max Decisions to Continue Fantastic Horror ’30 Coins’
Filming of the Globetrotting series will take place in Spain, Italy, the USA, France and the UK, with the second season scheduled to air in 2023. A hit in its homeland of Spain, the series has also found success abroad as it is made available in more regions on the WarnerMedia-owned streaming platform.
Rumors of the second season started last September when production company De la Iglesia and Pokeepsie Films tweeted photos of the director in the quaint Pedraza town square where the “30 Coins” action kicked off and wrote, “It’s coming back.”
There are some questions for the second season: Is Father Vergera in the real Pedraza square? Or in an alternate version? Is he alive? But where is his arch-enemy, Cardinal Santoro?
As the second season begins, several Pedraza citizens went crazy and were sent to a psychiatric hospital. While Elena (Megan Montaner) is bedridden in Madrid, Mayor Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) does his best to transform from vet to demon hunter. According to the scant details available so far, the new season promises an entirely new type of foe that strikes fear into Satan himself.
“30 Coins” was created and co-written by Jorge Guerricaechevarría. Other popular films the duo has partnered with include the doomsday classic “The Day of the Beast” (“El día de la Bestia”), “Witching and Bitching” (“Las brujas de Zugarramurdi”) and de la Iglesia starring Elijah Wood and Included is the language thriller “The Oxford Murders” shared by John Hurt.
