Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the second-longest book in the Harry Potter series. So it’s no wonder that some characters were cut out for the adaptation. But fans have long since spotted the cameo of what was actually a distant character…
For those who have only seen the Harry Potter movies and not read the books, names like Ludo Bagman, Bertha Jorkins, and Winky may not make much sense. They are all characters from the more than 700-page novel “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, which were deleted for the film adaptation of the same name. But even characters that have already been introduced in the film series did not find a place in the director’s magic blockbuster due to time constraints Mike Newell.
For example, Dobby the house-elf (Toby Jones) – is known for “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”. But is Dobby really not to be seen in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”? It has long been known among fans that the house-elf can most likely be spotted in a brief scene, even if his role was actually cut.
In this article we explain where the Easter egg should be hidden – if you want to keep an eye out for it yourself, you can do so, for example, on Monday, April 4, 2022, at 8:15 p.m. on Sat.1, because “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” is showing there. Of course, it’s easier to view the film on Blu-ray or DVD, because you can repeat scenes as many times as you like if you think you’ve spotted Dobby. Alternatively, “Harry Potter 4” is currently also available as a subscription to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
Dobby and Winky in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
If true, the cameo at the beginning of the film occurs during the crowded Quidditch World Cup. Shortly after Ginny Weasley’s (Bonnie Wright) “see” calls, two house-elves ride through the picture on llamas. One of them definitely looks like Dobby, while the other female elf could be Winky from the book.
That the makers actually included a small appearance of these figures instead of just two generic elves is made likely by this, that Dobby and Winky were originally supposed to appear in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Concept art was even done in pre-production for Winky, the hapless Crouch family elf.
In the Goblet of Fire novel, Dobby is the one who provides Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) with the dianthus herb he needs to survive the second trial of the Triwizard Tournament. In the film, that role falls instead to Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis), who is known to be a herbalist freak.
Winky’s storyline, on the other hand, was removed from the film entirely. In the book, she is rejected by the Crouch family as she is suspected of having cast the Dark Mark in the sky. She ends up unhappily in the Hogwarts kitchen. While Hermione (Emma Watson) is desperate to free her, Winky flatly refuses and becomes a Butterbeer alcoholic.
After the original idea of making the bestseller Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in two parts was scrapped by director Mike Newell, screenwriter Steven Kloves and JKRowling, the story had to be shortened a bit. Dobby and Winky are two of the characters that fell by the wayside. However, it would only be befitting of the filmmakers, with all the preliminary work, to allow her to appear at least briefly in the finished work.
