“Halloween Ends” released on October 12 marks the end of the confrontation between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. Much awaited by fans of the saga, the film ends with the death of one of the two protagonists. But this end has not always been the one you see in the final cut. Find out why.
Halloween Ends : continuation and end
When tackling the myth of Michael Myers in 2018, director and screenwriter David Gordon Green had planned a trilogy. After a postponement of the second part due to the health crisis, the saga ended in this month of october 2022 with the well-appointed Halloween Ends. And this opus was particularly awaited by the fans.
Indeed, after two first films spent witnessing the bloody reunion between Michael Myers and Laurie Strode, this last feature film was to put an end to this mythical duel. In other words: pick a winner between Michael and Laurie. But rather than devoting the entire film to raising the tension between these two protagonists, David Gordon Green preferred to put them in the background.
Thus, the focus of this conclusion is more on Allyson, Laurie’s granddaughter, and her new boyfriend Corey, who bears uncanny similarities to Michael Myers. The long-awaited final fight between Michael and Laurie does take place at the end of the film, and the latter manages to kill him without too much difficulty. Also, to appease the town of Haddonfield, she decides to transport her remains in plain sight, tied to the roof of a car. And to make sure he won’t come back, his body is then minced beef.
A controversial ending
In the United States, before each release of a highly anticipated film, test screenings are organized by the distributor. In the first cut ofHalloween Endsthe end did not contain the procession and this gore passage in which the body of Michael Myers was crushed.
We wanted to keep it modest, and make it a more intimate ending. The previous movie was very expansive, loud, aggressive, almost an action movie. I wanted to go back to more dramatic roots.
said David Gordon Green in an interview given to Entertainment Weekly. But he was not totally satisfied during the test screenings. He adds :
But I realized that it was necessary to bring a little grandeur to the whole. This is where the idea for the processional sequence came from. This end was decided this summer, two months ago.
Finally, he concludes by saying that this end brings optimism and satisfactionafter the dark end of Halloween Kills:
We thought of many purposes. Some were dark, and some less so. Finally, the end that we have chosen is I believe optimistic and full of hope. After the dark ending of Kills, I didn’t want to do it again. I wanted to end on a note of satisfaction.
