God of War Ragnarok: big changes for the fights

The promotional machine of God of War Ragnarok is triggered with a cover that reveals the big news brought to the fights with new images. Here’s everything we know.

Number 349 of Game Informer is dedicated to the game that the boss of Xbox is waiting for the most. The PS4 and PS5 exclusive God of War Ragnarok. Far from being a simple copy and paste, the Santa Monica teams have largely reviewed the clashes.

God of War Ragnarok: battles inspired by old games

Mihir Sheth and Denny Yeh, two lead combat designers from Santa Monica Studio revealed that God of War Ragnarok is inspired by old games and a studio motto which is that of “playing with food”.

It’s an internal philosophy that we have had since that time. Kratos plays with his food. We have tried to create systems that people want to get involved in that are fun, very playful, with different possibilities. And when we watched the fights in the last game, we thought “We can go further, we can find new toys and new ways to play with enemies and strategies.” This has been our guideline.

The complementarity between Kratos and Atreus will also be further developed. The young man will take even more initiatives to hit enemies with his arrows and his father will be more versatile. His Blades of Chaos will allow him to pick up enemies from above in the blink of an eye.

“Weapon Signature Abilities”, one of the new features

In addition to possibly more aerial gameplay, with longer combos, Kratos will have “signature abilities” for his Leviathan Ax and Blades of Chaos. Our demigod will be able to infuse his weapons with fire (Whiplash attack) or ice (Frost Awaken attack).

This new feature is assigned to the Triangle key which previously was assigned to recall the ax.

In God of War, if you pressed Triangle, you recalled the axe. But if you were already equipped with the axe, nothing happened. If you were equipped with the Blades of Chaos and pressed Triangle, you would revert to the Leviathan Axe. We lingered on that and thought, “What if we could do something a little different with this button. A brand new suite of moves.”

Several shields for Kratos

From now on, Kratos will also be able to defend himself with different shields. Two were presented: the “Dauntless” to react quickly and the “Stonewall” which is more suitable for slow fights. When parrying at the last moment with the Dauntless, the shield will glow red to let the player know they can then initiate a devastating counter that knocks up and stuns enemies.

But with the Stoneless, it’s impossible to parry the blows. The idea is therefore rather to use it as a guard to absorb the “kinetic energy” of the opponents. Once charged, the shield can be hit on the ground to cause a shockwave that will knock down anyone nearby. The other side of the coin is that by receiving blows, it becomes unstable. Some attacks can therefore pass through and hurt our dear Kratos.

These are just two examples, but there will be many other new toys to guard against enemy attacks.

Increased difficulty for God of War Ragnarok

Finally, be aware that in the highest difficulty levels, the aggressiveness and lethality of enemies have been increased. Some places may be repopulated with more powerful, more dangerous fauna, and other optional places that are difficult to complete without the proper equipment.

Before the release of God of War Ragnarök, which scared several games, on November 9, do not hesitate to consult this essential video.
