A sequel to “Gladiator” has been in development for several years now. While Ridley Scott will be able to start production very soon, he has just praised the scenario of this “Gladiator 2”.
Gladiator : a masterpiece of the seventh art
In 2000, Ridley Scott hired comedian Russell Crowe in just one of his best roles. Indeed, the latter embodies Maximus in the unforgettable Gladiator. The feature film is a huge success, with the press and spectators. Of his 12 Oscar nominations, the feature film won 5 including Best Film and Best Actor statuettes for Russell Crowe. At the box office, Gladiator brings back more than $ 465 million in revenue. Twenty years after the success of this immense classic of the seventh art, Ridley Scott has decided to embark on the production of a sequel.
At the moment not much is known about the sequel to Gladiator. Production of the already slow baseline project has been delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we know that this sequel is written by screenwriter Peter Craig and will be directed by Ridley Scott himself. As for the return of Russell Crowe, it remains uncertain.
An incredible script according to the filmmaker
Gladiator 2 should apparently focus on the story of Lucius, Lucilla’s son, who will be heavily influenced by Maximus’ journey. In a recent interview with Deadline, Ridley Scott returned to the first film:
I love making period films. I think with the first Gladiator we did something exceptional. I don’t like to criticize, but I wasn’t particularly fond of the Roman Hollywood epics that have been produced before. They all seemed quite artificial. And with that influence, the very first Gladiator script wasn’t good.
The filmmaker then explained the reasons that prompted her to return to directing a second Gladiator. He said in particular that an image, that of a former Roman gladiator on the verge of death inside the Colosseum, pushed her to return. This is an illustration titled For those about to die by Gérôme. This image of the Colosseum and the various gladiators present made him want to resume the saga. He also confirmed that the script of this sequel is now complete:
I went there, and said I would. I was offered to read the script and said no. We left like that and we started to develop the new script. Now it’s over. We have a good footprint, a good logical place to go. You can’t just do another Gladiator-type movie. You must continue the story!
Ridley Scott then confirmed that he helped Peter Craig to rewrite the script, and to prepare for the shoot. Apparently, the filmmaker should logically take care of Gladiator 2 when he’s finished the shooting of Napoleon with Joaquin Phoenix. Waiting for, House of Gucci, his next film, is due in cinemas on November 24:
