Long awaited, the new series of France 2 “Germinal” reveals its universe and part of its prestigious cast in a first teaser. Impressive sets, tension and “black faces”, this new adaptation of Émile Zola’s novel promises to be ambitious.
A new adaptation of Émile Zola’s masterpiece
Tour around Lille at the start between October 2020 and January 2021, the series Germinal is one of the most anticipated television productions of the year. And for good reason : Germinal is a very great novel of French literature signed Émile Zola and published in 1885, already adapted several times to the cinema with in particular the feature film of the same name by Claude Berri in 1993. At the time, the director had assembled a cast of first choice (Gérard Depardieu, Renaud, Miou-Miou, Jean Carmet …). And this is one of the similarities maintained with this new adaptation proposed by David Hourrègue and Julien Lilti. While waiting for its release in the fall, after a world premiere at the Séries Mania 2021 festival, we can already discover thethe tone of the series and its beautiful cast in a first teaser (at the top of the article).
A five-star cast to tell the story of the coal mines
Faithful to the work of 1885, Germinal serial version tells the story of Etienne Lantier, a young unemployed person who came to the North of France to be hired as a miner. There, in the mines of Montsou, he will then discover appalling working conditions, and fall in love with Catherine Maheu. We will not say more about the unfolding of history and the adventures encountered by the young hero of Germinal, except that it is a question of the destinies of these mine workers, their intimate journeys such as the great collective, political and social history, which they will write together.
A dark and dramatic story, which at first glance seems to be staged with a particularly careful, broad and ambitious artistic direction. Music, photography, historical reconstruction … This first teaser announces a show a priori up to the subject.
To embody the characters in this story, Étienne, Toussaint Maheu, La Maheude, Catherine, Chaval, La Pierronne, the production has put the small dishes in the big ones. Indeed, it aligns a casting of great standing. We find in the images of this teaser familiar faces. Among others, we discover Sami Bouajila, Guillaume de Tonquédec, Thierry Godard, and in the role of Etienne Lantier the young Louis Peres. On the female side, Natacha Lindinger and Alix Poisson are the headliners of this program. This will be divided into 6 episodes of 52mn each.
