Martin wants his universe to reap the rewards

George RR Martin on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” does not hide the competitive spirit that will be experienced between the prequel series “House of the Dragon” and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” this year. “House of the Dragon” will premiere on August 21, followed by “LOTR” on Prime Video on September 2. Both series will be in front of the audience at the same time with new episodes.
While Martin is excited for television audiences to watch more epic and fantasy projects, he still wants “Dragon” to beat “Rings.” “House of the Dragon” versus “Rings”, Martin told The Independent at the Santa Fe Literary Festival! Who will win this war? I don’t know why they always have to do this. Hopefully, both shows will be successful. I am competitive enough. I hope we will be more successful. If they win six Emmys, which I hope they do, I hope we win seven, but still, it’s good for the fantasy genre. I love the genre. I also love science fiction. I want more programs on TV.” said.
Speaking about The Lord of the Rings, Martin said, “As you know, this is a bit of a strange deal. Amazon bought Tolkien, but they didn’t actually buy any of the books. They didn’t get ‘Lord of the Rings’, they didn’t get ‘The Hobbit’, they didn’t even get ‘The Silmarillion.’ “I don’t think they got Farmer Giles of Ham” or “Leaf by”, but I think they got their supplement and they’re building a Second Age story about it. There are a lot of legends about it, so it will be interesting to see what they do.” said.
“House of the Dragon”, “Game of Thrones” takes place 200 years before the events of Paddy Considine (King Viserys I), Emma D’Arcy (Princess Rhaenrya, Viserys’ first child and heir), Matt Smith (Prince Daemon, Viserys’ younger brother), Rhys Ifans (Ser Otto Hightower, Hand of the King), Olivia Cooke (Otto’s daughter, Lady Alicent Hightower), Fabien Frankel (Ser Criston Cole, a knight/Rhaenrya’s eyes), Steve Toussaint (Lord Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Serpent), Eve Best ( Princess Rhaenys Velaryon) and Sonoya Mizuno (Mysaria, Daemon Targaryen’s confidant).
