House of the Dragon, the first Game of Thrones spin-off, has the former stars of the cult series reacting. While some are very enthusiastic, others are a little more wary.
First Game of Thrones spin-off to see the light of day, will House of the Dragon be able to win over fans? Set 300 years before the fall of the Throne, this prequel series, adapted from the novel Fire & Blood by George RR Martin, will return to the origins of House Targaryen.
Worn by Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith and Rhys Ifans, House of the Dragon is one of the most anticipated new series of the year. And a privileged person has already seen the pilot episode of this spin-off created by Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan J. Condal! It was George RR Martin, the author of the novels, who was also very enthusiastic in a post on his blog :
“Well, I’m not objective. And I know a lot of the things you’re going to see. Also… motus and tight mouth, don’t tell anyone… I saw a rough cut of the first episode. And I loved it. It’s dark, it’s powerful, it’s visceral…just the way I like my epic fantasy”.
This positive feedback from the author is rather encouraging, but what about the expectations of former Game of Thrones stars? Obviously Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen, is eager to see the series. Even though the Mother of Dragons thought it was inevitable, she’s pretty excited about House of the Dragon, as she confided to Entertainment Weekly :
“It’s just inevitable. I wish them all the best, it will be what it will be, but of course they do other shows. You can’t create something that big and not have people say people: “What? What else? That’s really good! Let’s do a lot more! And [Miguel Sapochnik], I absolutely love it. I have no doubt it will be a huge hit, because he’s just genius.”
Same story for Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, the interpreter of Jaime Lannister, who warns of the double-edged effect that the link of the series with Game of Thrones can have. During an interview for the show Good Morning America, the Danish actor was amazed by the first images of House of the Dragon and hopes that the public will follow: “I thought it was amazing. Matt Smith wears that white wig so well. I was just waiting for Emilia Clarke to show up since it’s the world of the Targaryens. I can’t wait to watch the show.”
For his part, Kit Harington, the eternal Jon Snow, admitted that it will be painful for him to watch House of the Dragon. He explained to Insider that he was emotionally attached to the series:
“I think seeing people wearing outfits and costumes, which looks like what we’ve been wearing for all these years, with the same music and the same style and the same tone, but without taking part in it, there’s a kind of brutality in there.”
More recently, Peter Dinklage, the interpreter of Tyrion Lannister, who commented on the Game of Thrones spin-off. The actor warns about what could get stuck with House of the Dragon during an interview for The Independent :
“I think the trick is not to try to recreate Game of Thrones. If you try to recreate it, it’s just going to be a scam. That’s the problem with sequels, they’re made for financial reasons so they’re not as strong. But I’m excited to watch House of the Dragon, just as a viewer, not knowing what’s going to happen next.”
