The atmosphere was electric between Marie Laforêt and Alain Delon during the filming of “Plein soleil”, the first not supporting the contempt of the second after their disastrous meeting. The actress also had to suffer seasickness and the mockery of Romy Schneider.
full sun : the first appearance of Tom Ripley
Before Dennis Hopper, Matt Damon or even John Malkovich succeeded him in the skin of the forger and assassin, Alain Delon was the first to play Tom Ripley in the cinema. Released in 1960, this adaptation of the novel Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith directed by René Clément made the actor’s career take off and propelled him at the top of European cinema.
Alain Delon therefore lends his features to this enigmatic young man, charged by the billionaire Greenleaf to bring his son Philippe (Maurice Ronet) to San Francisco, while the latter’s vacation in Italy drags on. Arrived on the spot, Tom quickly approaches Philippe and his mistress Marge (Marie Laforêt). He becomes their handyman and continually suffers the humiliations of the wealthy young man. Ripley, however, does not intend to endure his contempt for long.
Romy Schneider completes the cast of this crushing thriller, which brings together more than 1.8 million spectators during its first exhibition in French cinemas. A feature film which, in addition to marking a consecration for its headliner, reveals Marie Laforêt following a particularly complicated shoot.
The ordeal of Marie Laforêt
The actress who died in 2019 did not never hid his contempt for Alain Delon. As reported france sundayMarie Laforêt sums it up this way after the production of full sun :
Varnish, but with nothing inside.
She also says about the star and her friend Maurice Ronet, quoted by Live Cinema Studio :
Alain Delon and Maurice Ronet were so pretentious, so contemptuous: two assholes!
A contempt that she feels throughout the filming of the thriller. Asked by france sundayhis biographer Alain Wodrascka explains:
Maurice Ronet and Delon snubbed her. And Romy Schneider laughed at her when she joined her fiancé on set.
Marie Laforêt must also face to seasickness, “at the bottom of a boat that stinks of death”.
A disastrous first meeting
To these painful conditions is added a disastrous first meeting with Alain Delon. When she has just arrived on the set, the interpreter of My love my friend finds himself in an elevator with the actor, who throws at him:
Do you want me to jump you?
After his refusal, he adds:
You don’t know what you are losing.
With “gritty humour”, she immediately retorts:
You won’t know what you’re missing either!
Nine years later, Marie Laforêt finds herself involved in spite of herself in a case which also concerns Alain Delon. When actor Stefan Markovic’s secretary and bodyguard is found murdered, the actress’ contact details are discovered at the deceased’s home.
A few months later, she finds herself indicted, accused by a crow of having participated in intimate evenings photographed by the bodyguard. An interrogation of several hours from which Marie Laforêt emerges whitewashed but which is a “nightmare” for her, and which accentuates her resentment towards her former playing partner.
