On display in France and elsewhere for only a few days, “Free Guy” is already meeting success with very good first results at the box office. Ryan Reynolds takes the opportunity to teaser the construction of a sequel at Disney.
Free Guy : Ryan Reynolds as NPC who rebels
In The Truman Show, Jim Carrey discovered that he was an actor in spite of himself in a fictitious life. It is the same idea, in another form, which is at the origin of Free Guy. Shawn Levy’s New Film Presents Ryan Reynolds as a bank clerk who turns out to be an NPC. A secondary character in a video game, which does not serve much except to furnish the universe. Aware of his condition, he decides to revolt and take his life in hand. He then tries to come to the fore and become the hero of a story that was not written for him. Video game adaptations rarely bring satisfaction. In this case, it is an original pitch but which makes multiple references to the video game world. We are witnessing a funny, explosive show, led by a Ryan Reynolds always good at mixing action and second degree.
The film arrived on August 11 in our theaters and two days later in the United States. At the end of its first weekend of operation in North America, it has already harvested $ 28.4 million. A start with fanfare, which is confirmed with 50.9 million in total worldwide. Beautiful figures for a film which is not affiliated with an existing license and which only releases in theaters. To compare, The Suicide Squad made 26.2 million at home (not counting the release on HBO Max) and Jungle Cruise made 35 million.
A sequel already underway?
Free Guy is owned by Disney, which is releasing it through 20th Century Studios, their new branch following the acquisition of Fox. Faced with the first good results, we learn that the firm with big ears is tempted by a second film. It was Ryan Reynolds who threw the information on his Twitter account, with a little spike in passing:
Eeeeeeeet after 3 years of presenting Free Guy as an original and unique film, Disney today confirmed that they want a sequel.
The tweet is funny because it is accompanied by a Gif of Taika Waititi in Free Guy. He embodies a businessman who has a vision very focused on profitability and money. It’s funny to think that the film mocks what Disney often does, and gives new proof with this sequel that would be on the rails. No information is yet known on it. We can nevertheless rule on the almost obvious presence of Ryan Reynolds at the head of the bill.
