When it became known in 2008 that cult director Robert Rodriguez (“From Dusk Till Dawn”) is working on a remake of the comic book “Red Sonja”, enthusiasm spread. Rose McGowan was set to follow in the footsteps of Brigitte Nielsen, who played the warrior in 1985’s “Red Sonja,” but nothing came of it. In 2018 it was “X-Men” mastermind Bryan Singer who was to take over. But even with him, the project did not materialize. However, the production studio Millennium Films did not give up and so a few years later it was finally announced, which many fans might not have expected today: The shooting of “Red Sonja” has started. Finally!

And not only that. Now a first picture of the new Red Sonja has been published. On it you can see: The red-haired title heroine, now embodied by the Italian Matilda Lutz, in full gear – including a sword, of course.

Matilda Lutz as Red Sonja

At 21, Matilda Lutz is only a year younger than Brigitte Nielsen when she started her acting career with “Red Sonja”. In terms of physique, the two cannot be compared at first glance: Nielsen is 1.85 meters tall, her successor only 1.70. Still, Lutz could be the perfect choice for the role of the vengeful, uncompromising warrior:

Then you know Lutz above all from the hammer-hard revenge-ripper “Revenge”which has some parallels with the story of Red Sonja in terms of content: In both cases, a woman is raped and left behind by the perpetrators to die – and in both cases the tormentors get their fat off in the course of a bitter revenge campaign.

While Nielsen was once given Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was not allowed to slip into his Conan role as planned due to the legal situation and finally appeared as Lord Kalidor, we will not see the Styrian oak in the remake. Instead, Michael Bisping (“3: The Return Of Xander Cage”), the giant Martyn Ford known from action films like “Fast & Furious 9” and “Undisputed IV” as well as Robert Sheehan, the fans of the hit series ” The Umbrella Academy” as Klaus Hargreeves.

Directed by MJ Bassett, who brings plenty of horror and, above all, action experience from film and television. The Brit staged isolated episodes of series such as “Ash Vs. Evil Dead”, “Reacher”, “The Terminal List”, “Marvel’s Iron Fist” and “Strike Back”as well as the animal horror action “Rogue” starring Megan Fox.

And the producing studio behind the filmmaker is also best known for relevant genre fare: Millenium Films has made a name for itself in recent years with film series such as “Undisputed”, “The Expendables” and numerous other action films – from “Rambo 5” to “The Protege”.

When and how “Red Sonja” will appear in Germany is not yet known. However, we do not expect a start until the second half of 2023 at the earliest.
